Teen Job Fair Chair Son said that she sent several few emails to encourage more businesses to participate in the Teen Job Fair. She said they can definitely use some more push to invite businesses. With the event just three weeks away on March 5th, a Tuesday from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm at the Arlington Ridge Center, there is a need for additional outreach. She said it would be great to have all the Commissioners help out at the event. She said they really need the most help with is in the beginning for setup and throughout the event to guide the teens. Chair Son mentioned that 10 businesses have signed up, but the goal is to reach 20. Chair Son distributed letters and flyers to the Commissioners for further promotion. Additionally, there was discussion on the parents’ lounge and offering light refreshments for the parents. Chair Son stated that a map of all the businesses will be distributed to the teens. She also mentioned offering further assistance to the teens by suggesting questions they could ask, such as availability/flexibility, pay rate, training and dress code/uniform. There will also be volunteer opportunities for teens under 16 and teens who do not have work visas. The Commission considered organizing a raffle where each teen would receive raffle tickets to drop off at each booth. At the end of the night, the raffle tickets will be gathered, and a winner will be chosen. VI. NEW BUSINESS A. 2024 Voting Awareness Project Chair Son worked in collaboration with the Youth Commission to outline the objectives and results of the 2024 Voting Awareness Project. The idea of hosting monthly workshops in schools, facilitated by the library, to enlighten teenagers about voting was discussed. These workshops would involve interactive games to educate the teens. The Commission aims to raise awareness about voting, provide education on researching candidates, and assist eligible teens in registering to vote. VII. OTHER BUSINESS A. Commission Reports 1. Library Chair Son reported that Winter Reading at the library is done and it was something they did for the first time this year. Unfortunately, there was minimal participation attributed to the short break and teens being engaged in other activities during that time. The library is preparing for summer and the Teen Job Fair. During the summer, the library offers various activities such as Summer Reading and Summer Volunteer Squad, providing volunteering opportunities for teens. The Summer Volunteer Squad specifically caters to 2 teen volunteers, offering a chance to fulfill service hour requirements for school. This is a convenient way to meet their obligations over the summer. 2. Park District Commissioner Healy said that there is not much going on except preparing for the Teen Job Fair and the Park District is already getting ready for summer hiring, such as lifeguards and lesson instructors. 3. Police Department No report. 4. Schools Commissioner Moore said that everyone is glad to be back in school and ready for spring. 5. Commissioners at Large Commissioner McQuade (Hersey) mentioned that they are getting back into the swing of things having their first full weeks of school. She said that basketball season is coming to an end and indoor track just started with their first meet last Tuesday. Everyone else is also picking up their spring sports which includes soccer, lacrosse and baseball. Commissioner Hong (Buffalo Grove) reported that his school is focusing on volunteer hours. They have been sending emails to the students regarding volunteer opportunities. Commissioner Jochaniewicz (St. Viator) reported that winter sports are ending and spring sports are starting the following week. She said that their Turnabout is next Saturday. Commissioner Smith (Prospect) said nothing new is going on except winter sports are ending and spring sports are starting. VIII. ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Hong, seconded by Commissioner Smith, moved to adjourn at 6:58 p.m. all concurred and the motion carried unanimously. 3
