PUBLIC ARTS COMMISSION ANNUAL MEETING
Meeting Minutes – May 12, 2026
Present: Cindy Burger, Kristi Miller, Lisa Bruns, Sandy Henson & Emelie Rivera
Absent: Marcia BMarthaler and Lisa Jonas
Others: Michelle Miller, City Clerk and Scott Schroeder, Parks & Trails Dept, Brett Wallin &
Elaine Hardwick from Voyageurs Expeditionary School
Bruns called the meeting to order at 1PM.
Agenda: The agenda was approved on a motion by Miller with a second by Henson after
moving the Voyageurs issue to the top.
Minutes: The April 28, 2025 minutes were approved on a motion by Burger with a second by
Henson. Motion carried.
Voyageurs School: Elaine Hardwick and Brett Wallin, from Voyageurs, attended to ask
“permission” to have their students create art out of some of the tree stumps and other
downed items in one or more of the city parks. They’d received a grant to install and secure the
pieces and would now like a green light from us. A couple parks suggested are Algoma and the
‘story walk’ area of North Country park on 30th St. Schroeder will take it to the Parks
Commission. Miller motioned to recommend Voyageurs Expeditionary School students make
art out of storm damage in Bemidji Parks. Second by Henson. Motioned carried.
2025 Annual Report: Burger motioned to approve the report with a second by Miller. Motion
carried. Bruns will take it to the City Council.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Mural: We received a bid, of $8,000, from Wesley May (the
original artist) to repaint the mural. Rivera will take it to the Council on Monday May 18th.
BDA Kiosk Artist Reception: It is planned for Sept 12th from 5-7 at the Watermark Art Center.
We should attend.
Trash Can Lids: Elaine Netland submitted a bid of $300 per lid. Schroeder will contact her to
direct her to the appropriate lids. Henson motioned to approve with a second by Burger.
Motion carried.
City of Bemidji Centennial Sign: Schroeder would like an artist to re-paint the sign down by
Paul and Babe. Butch Dodge was suggested or possibly Brett Wallin. Their contacts will be sent
to Scott.
Next meeting is July 14th at 1PM
Meeting adjourned on a motion by Miller, second by Burger. Motion carried.
