CAROLINA ART |T1
ASSOCIATION |T2
In 1857 a group of civic- |1
minded Charlestonians |2
established the Carolina |3
Art Association. The goal |4
of the CAA was to promote |5
fine arts in S.C. The CAA |6
was awarded its official |7
state charter in 1858. The |8
CAA is today the oldest |9
surviving arts association |10
in the southeast. Upon his |11
death in 1888, patron of |12
the arts James S. Gibbes |13
left a bequest that allowed|14
the city and the CAA to |15
build a museum of fine art.|16

Designed by Frank Milburn, |1
the James S. Gibbes |2
Memorial Art Gallery, now |3
the Gibbes Museum of Art, |4
opened in 1905. The Beaux |5
Arts-style building is the |6
oldest purpose-built museum|7
in S.C. and the oldest |8
permanent structure |9
designed for the display of|10
art in the south. In 1936 |11
the museum became the first|12
to exhibit the Solomon R. |13
Guggenheim Collection of |14
modern art. It was expanded|15
in 1978 and again in 2016. |16
