Earth Day: April 22 Logo for Reusable Bags Plastic Transition Message City Green Team Will be helping on outreach for Citywide plastic transition and broadening recycling programs Sustainability Next Steps Green Plan Audit Green Plan Audit https://www.charleston-sc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/25231/Green-Plan-Audit Sustainability Next Steps ● Emission Reduction Metrics ○ Dashboard to track 80% emissions goal by 2050 on website coming soon ○ Gathering City emissions reductions from Johnson Controls ○ Start next Greenhouse Gas Inventory Process (currently have data for 2002, 2006, 2010) ● Charleston Rainproof ○ Rain garden and rain barrel pilot project in neighborhoods ● Adopt-a-Drain ● Improving City Fleet ○ Purchasing more fuel efficient vehicles i.e. hybrid and electric; Feasibility of alternative fuels ○ Improving and expanding electric vehicle infrastructure ● City Green Team ● Create a Communications and Public Education plan ● Support Energy Efficiency ● Waste reduction and plastic transition program Sustainability Next Steps Committee Discussion Prioritizing Sustainability Initiatives Charleston Rainproof www.charleston-sc.gov/rainproof Updates on Army Corps Of Engineers Peninsula Coastal Flood Risk Management Study Study Overview ● 3x3 Study ○ 3 years / 3 million ○ 100% federally funded ● Started October 2018 ● Focus on protection from storm surge Study Boundaries Study Overview ● Examining structural and non-structural alternatives from storm surge protection ● Alternatives analysis ongoing ○ Modeling different combinations of alternatives ○ Different heights and footprint of potential barrier ● Modeling and economic analysis expected to wrap up soon ● Alternatives Analysis delivers highest possible cost/benefit ratio ● Recent Site Visits with Federal, State, and Local Agencies ○ Historic Preservation Agencies ○ Natural Resource Agencies ● Army Corps has had preliminary conversations with SCDOT and Ports Authority Next Steps ● Army Corps selects National Economic Development (NED) Plan following conclusion of alternatives analysis and economic modeling ● City has been continuously working on Locally Preferred Plan (LPP) NED Plan LPP Tentatively Selected Plan Timeline Moving Forward ● January/February 2020: Tentatively Selected Plan & Public Meeting ● Plan Optimization/External Review: 2020 – 2021 ● Final Chief of Engineers Report: October 2021 Adopt - a- Drain www.charleston-sc.gov/Adopt-A-Drain Public Comment Period
