City of Columbia, Missouri Meeting Minutes Commission on Cultural Affairs Wednesday, August 9, 2017 Board Room Executive Committee Walton Building 4:15 PM 300 S. Providence Rd. Columbia, Mo. 65203 I. CALL TO ORDER Chair Krawitz called the meeting to order at 4:15 p.m. Present: 5- Aaron Krawitz, Melody Marcks, Kevin Shults, Michael Sleadd and Lili Vianello II. INTRODUCTIONS No audience present III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion made by Sleadd, second by Marcks, motion carried IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Shults, seconded by Marcks, motion carried. NEW BUSINESS Review of August Commission Meeting Agenda A draft of the August Commission meeting agenda was distributed and reviewed. Krawitz has invited Dr. Julia Gaines, director of the MU School of Music, to make a presentation about the school’s new building project. He stated that it is important to update the Commission on these types of activities on campus. The School of Music’s new recital hall will impact many performing arts organizations in the community, providing an additional venue for groups to perform. Krawitz also suggested that the Commission continue to invite funded organizations to make short presentations at future meetings, continue to acquaint these groups with the Commission. He suggested inviting newly-funded organizations first. Krawitz reported that he plans to ask a couple Commissioners to serve on the nominating committee. Since three of the current executive committee members will be leaving the Commission, there will be the opportunity for several new officers to take on those roles. Since there will not be an immediate past chair, the nominating committee may want to consider having two members-at-large on the executive committee. Dresser stated that she will ask the City Clerk’s office about the timeline of Commission Openings and Appointments ahead of the August 14th meeting. Dresser stated that there is also an opening on the Standing Committee on Public Art. Dresser will provide letters to Vianello to go to Missouri Governor and State Legislators regarding Missouri Arts Council funding. Krawitz stated that he will encourage Commissioners to attend the Celebration of the Arts on September 13, and prompt the group to be a sponsor if they are able. VI. GENERAL COMMENTS BY PUBLIC, MEMBERS AND STAFF Vianello asked if OCA staff can provide Commissioner Orientation materials to the new and returning Commissioners, and include sections on Sunshine Law and legal requirements as well as an overall timeline of Commission activities (highlighting funding activities).
