Some vendors left after a strong storm blew down a number of tents. Commissioner Golding had three concerns regarding this year’s Festival. First, the directional signs were not placed around town until Sunday morning. Second, no posters of fliers were delivered to the Village or local businesses and there were no pamphlets or programs directing vendors to artists. He noted that Debbie Netter reported having printing problems. Third, Commissioner Golding noted that he did not see a display ad in the Deerfield Review. Chairman Marks noted that he heard radio ads, including on WBEZ. He noted that the Fine Arts Commission would need to review these issues with D & W Events before rewarding next year’s contract. Page 1 of 3 Fine Arts Commission April 27, 2015 Commissioner Golding noted that the Preview Party was good. The Commission had changed the menu to feature more appetizer-style foods. He noted that the food selections were so popular that some were all eaten. Commissioner Fiedler believes the same type of food selection should be used again next year. Commissioners noted that attendance at the preview party was about the same as the previous year and seemed to be more laid back. They noted that there was a nice mix of artists. The Commissioners discussed the invitations. The invitations come through the DBR Chamber as a “Business Afterhours” event, causing some to think the invitations do not come from the Village. Staff will look at changes to the invitations to clarify that it is from the Village Commissioner Golding noted that food trucks may be a good idea to use for next year’s event. Commission Warren suggested providing more information to the artists at the preview party so they know more about the invited guests. Chairman Marks noted that focusing on one type of media helped the commissioners this year in reviewing artists for the Purchase Award. He is pleased with the pieces purchased from Leslie Emery this year. 5. Public Art Program Chairman Marks reported the submission deadline is in early July, and proposed reviewing the e the artwork at a meeting in mid-July. Director Julison noted he likes the process used the previous year of choosing which pieces go to which public places. Library Outreach Coordinator Hoffman would like the new Library director to be present when the artwork is chosen. She noted the Library would be willing to host the open house again this year. 6. Public Art in Large-Scale Village Center Developments Chairman Marks reported on the Plan Commission meeting he attended with Analyst Fitzgerald. Commissioner Seidman asked to review the definition of Public Art prepared by the Plan Commission. Comments were made. Commissioner Fiedler noted that landscape art or architecture should also be encouraged. 7. Public Murals Once approved by AT&T, Commissioner Fiedler and Weiskopf will work on the project, including arranging an artist. Analyst Fitzgerald will provide an update at the next regular meeting. 8. Park District Update Director Julison reported that summer camps open today. The Stage and Screen class has 80 kids. The DYBA wooden bat tourney last weekend was a success. The Dance workshop for the upcoming musical auditions was held last month. He reported that following Bob Gand’s passing, the Park District is splitting bands into two groups, supporting both: Deerfield Community Band, and Big Band Sounds of Deerfield. Commissioner Fiedler questioned whether the class is as educational as the Commission’s normal artist sponsorships. The Commission decided to reconsider the motion in July and the Library will get more information about the class. 10.
