VILLAGE OF DEERFIELD FINE ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Meeting – Monday, March 7, 2016 6:00 p.m. – Community Conference Room 206 Members Present: Jeff Marks, Chair Ed Seidman Jim Golding Dottie Fiedler Kathleen Warren Jill Shapiro Rick Julison Judy Hoffman Joseph Taylor Also Present: David Fitzgerald, Management Analyst Not Present: Barbara Weiskopf 1. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairman Marks at 6:00 p.m. 2. Approval of Minutes Commissioner Seidman move to approve the minutes from the June 22, 2015, meeting. Commissioner Golding seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. 3. Public Comment No one was present for public comment. 4. 2016 Festival of Fine Arts Analyst Fitzgerald reported that he has been in contact with Debbie Netter and that she is in the process of reviewing applications and the jury process. He stated that the new deliverable dates in the contract should make the planning process much easier. Commissioner Golding stated that he has been in discussions with Dear Franks to be a food vendor this year. Analyst Fitzgerald asked Commissioner Golding to contact Ms. Netter regarding food vendors. Commissioner Golding discussed the Preview Party. He noted that we switched from wraps and salads to an assortment of appetizers last year. The appetizers were more popular. Commissioner Fiedler noted that she liked the appetizers and asked for more vegetarian options. 5. Public Murals Update Analyst Fitzgerald provided an update on the mural plan for the AT&T building. He reported that he had spoken with Mike Rodriguez of AT&T, who confirmed they are still willing to let the Village use their building for the mural, but would want to see the art and come to an Page 1 of 2 Fine Arts Commission March 7, 2016 agreement as to how it would be attached to the façade. Chairman Marks stated he would like the Commission to get Deerfield High School on Board for the project. Commissioner Taylor stated he would propose the concept to the DHS Art Department. Commissioner Warren stated that she would like to also have the students present designs to the Commission to further the educational aspect of the project. Chairman Marks noted there would be no theme and that the Village logo should not be included. Judy Hoffman stated the Library works with the DHS art department on various design projects and that it takes about three to four months of lead time. 6. Deerfield High School Update Mr. Taylor introduced himself to the Commission. Mr. Taylor is Assistant Principal for STEAM Instruction & Director of Instructional Technology at DHS. He noted that STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. He stated that he is looking forward to serving on the Commission and involving DHS in the community in new ways. 7. Park District Update Director Julison reported that the recent production of Mary Poppins sold 2,388 tickets, making it the largest show they have produced. He noted that Theater D was putting on Arsenic and Old Lace at the Patty Turner Center. 8. Library Update Ms. Hoffman reported that the Friends of the Library purchased the “Prairie Plants” mosaic that was part of the Rotating Public Art Program. It will now be on permanent display in the stairway. She reported the the Library is hosting the curator of the Thorne Miniature Rooms at the Art Institute. She stated that the antique appraisal event will be on April 14 and that the outsider art speaker is scheduled for October 6. 9. Other Projects/Items for Discussion Public Art Program Mr. Fitzgerald reported that submissions for the Public Art Program will start to be accepted in early April. It will also be highlighted in the next issue of D-Tales. High School Artists Commissioner Warren discussed ways to support high school artists. This included a mentorship program with local artists, meet-ups and hosting a high school art show outside of DHS. Commissioner Fiedler made a motion to adjourn. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Seidman.
