VILLAGE OF DEERFIELD FINE ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Meeting – Monday, April 11, 2016 6:00 p.m. – Community Conference Room 206 Members Present: Jeff Marks, Chair Ed Seidman Jim Golding Dottie Fiedler Kathleen Warren Judy Hoffman Jill Shapiro Barbara Weiskopf Also Present: David Fitzgerald, Management Analyst Not Present: Joseph Taylor, Rick Julison 1. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairman Marks at 6:00 p.m. 2. Approval of Minutes Commissioner Seidman move to approve the minutes from the March 2, 2016, meeting. Commissioner Golding seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. 3. Public Comment No one was present for public comment. 4. 2016 Festival of Fine Arts Chairman Marks reported that this year’s festival is on the same weekend as both Buffalo Grove’s festival and the 57th Street Art Fair. Currently 65 artists are registered. He suggested that the Commissioners encourage people they know to register and to reach out to boost the numbers with local artists. He noted that the festival has been as large as 120 in the past. Commissioner Golding discussed the preview party. He reviewed the menu for the evening. Commissioner Fiedler stated she thought the menu was perfect. Analyst Fitzgerald noted that he already had a number of artists sign up for the preview party. Chairman Marks asked that music be played through the televisions in Village Hall. 5. Deerfield High School Update Commissioner Warren reported that Joe Taylor was unable to attend the meeting due to illness. She noted that he is working with teachers now to jumpstart future projects. She outlined a “Meet the Artist” event To introduce Deerfield High School art students to local artists and give Page 1 of 2 Fine Arts Commission April 11, 2016 them the opportunity to ask questions about the local artist’s art, education, studio work, use of social media and art career, etc. Young aspiring artists can benefit from learning practical aspects of the art world from local artists immersed in the art world. The Fine Arts Commission will invite artists whose work is selected for the Deerfield Public Art Program to participate in a Meet the Artist event for Deerfield High School art students. The event would be 45 minutes before the Deerfield Public Art Program Open House for the artists in September 2016 at the Deerfield Public Library. She noted that Mr. Taylor was also speaking with teachers regarding the mural project. 6. Public Art Program Analyst Fitzgerald noted that he had sent out the information and the Commission would review the pieces in late July. 7. Park District Update Director Julison was not in attendance. 8. Library Update Ms. Hoffman reported that the Library is collecting used shoes to recycle through SWALCO. 9. Other Projects/Items for Discussion Commissioner Fiedler made a motion to adjourn. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Seidman.
