MINUTES DeKalb Human Relations Commission September 5, 2014 CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Norden Gilbert called the September 2, 2014 meeting of the DeKalb Human Relations Commission to order at 6:31 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Norden Gilbert, Ellingsworth Webb, Larry Apperson, Lisa King, Cheryl Appleton Absent: Joe Gastiger, Robert Williams Also Present: Mary Jo Harms, Staff Liaison APPROVAL OF MINUTES August minutes were approved by Apperson and seconded by Appleton with the following changes; Apperson was the person slated to contact other Communities regarding their Mission Statements and Gilbert was going to follow-up with the Mayor, City Council and City Attorney on the status of the Commission’s recommendation on Service Animals. OLD BUSINESS A. Report from Sub-Committee on HRC Conducting Community Group Meetings Sub-Committee did not meet. No discussion held. B. Discussion on Revision of Mission Statement Apperson reviewed webpages of a variety of Villages and Cities to see if the communities had similar groups such as the Human Relations Commission. None of the communities looked at displayed a Non-Discrimination or Mission Statement on their webpage. Apperson did discover an annual conference is held in Springfield. Webb visited several sites that do have Mission Statements. Illinois has a Mission Statement along with other states such as Pennsylvania and Washington. 1 Apperson will type up Mission Statement examples and send to Staff Liaison for distribution to other members for review. C. Update on Municipal Code Recommendations for Non-Discrimination Policy Gilbert hasn’t heard anything. Webb spoke to the Mayor last week to see if there was any update. Gilbert will email the Mayor, City Manager and City Attorney on status of Service Animal Recommendations. NEW BUSINESS A. Discussion and Review of Models for Re-Entry of Ex-Offenders Matter tabled next meeting. CITIZEN INPUT No discussion ADJOURNMENT Chairman Gilbert adjourned the meeting at 7:45 p.m. 2
