Minutes from April meeting approved with a motion by Wilma Jene and seconded by Larry.
Budget- Becky reported the budget for May 1- $49,925 total for this year. Parks labor- ie. watering,-
0.37% of budget. Fiscal year is May 1- April 30. 10 new flower pots were bought.
Davey Resource Group Meeting- Benna, Susan, David, Jeff, and Becky met for 1 ½ hours with
Davey Resource group. The group talked about updating the present manual. DRG has lots of insight
and good resources for us. Discussed how arboricultural manual should be a working document.
Consultant should be an advocate for the trees of our city.
Clock Tower and Coles Monument- Red Day- we want to clean up Coles monument. Most of the
knock-out roses are dead that were planted previously. We may need to replant the roses. We need to
look at the Clock Tower closer and look at the shrubs that were planted.
Tree City USA- 17th year of tree city designation awarded to Edwardsville. Benna, Wilma Jene, Jack,
Susan, Shawn and Kim were present at Edwardsville Meyer YMCA. Benna arranged sugar maple to
be planted with the assistance of Wolf Den pack 4072, St Boniface and St Mary schools. Two students
from Father McGivney high school read a poem. Bill Tucker was present from Intelligencer
newspaper.
Downtown Flower Pots- flowers were planted in pots and are doing great. We have 2 extra pots that
we could use in front of the new safety building. We earmarked some pots for shade-loving plants but
they ended up in the sun. Extra plants were taken to the Children’s museum. Plants at the library are
doing well. Public works plants are doing well.
Green Thumb Awards-We have 12 nominations with 10 award nominees possible. One nominee
refused the nomination because their back yard wasn’t quite ready. One nominee was attempted
contact but never connected after multiple attempts.
Welcome Signs- possibility that sign may get lighting from Ameren ran from street light pole on N.
Main Street. Suggested that we initiate an article in the newspaper about the new Edwardsville
Welcome signs. Mulching will be needed near signs because they are getting weedy.
New Business:
Saturday morning at the Market: We have a newly purchased tent now, we will need to bring our
own table and chairs. Public Relations--hand out rudbeckia seeds, black-eyed Susans (city perennial),
put some plants in pots, have a table at Goshen market to advertise before Green Thumb event.
Green Space- residential ordinance was updated, 10% area for single family homes, 4% passive and
6% active green space. Developers previously paid $12,000/acre and now pay $41,000/acre to buy
green space.
Meeting adjourned at 7:18 pm.
Next Meeting is June 26, 2018 at 6:30pm.
Respectfully submitted: Kimberley Schoenfeld
