What are your qualifications for serving on this committee? *
(Include education and expertise in the subject matter)
I am a native resident of Fayetteville, graduate of Fayetteville High School, Fellow of the University of Arkansas Honors College with a
Bachelor's degree in Architecture. I am currently employed by and collaborating with locally active architects and urbanists (Robert Sharp and
Allison Quinlan), engaging with the built environment meaningfully and thoughtfully. I have been previously employed by Arkansas-founded
architecture firm Polk Stanley Wilcox.
Why would you like to be considered for appointment to this committee? *
I am interested in local zoning reform, sustainable and creative housing advocacy and facilitating a generational shift in the way public space,
infrastructure, and municipal composition are considered. I am in search of experience within local policymaking and hope to familiarize
myself with the processes that dictate how my discipline is able to affect our locality. I would like to be a voice for the generation of urbanists
that will see NWA through the coming quarter-century of growth.

What are your qualifications for serving on this committee? *
(Include education and expertise in the subject matter)
I am a current Fayetteville small business owner with a Master of Public Policy focused in quantitative analysis. During my time with the U.S.
Department of Commerce (DOC) and U.S. Small Business Administration, I actively worked in public-private ecosystems to structure win-win
strategic economic partnerships. This included advocating for U.S. business interests during international trade negotiations resulting in
economic growth opportunities for small U.S. exporters to large companies.
Why would you like to be considered for appointment to this committee? *
The Planning Commission is crucial to ensuring Fayetteville continues its growth while preserving what makes it special. Policies that work for
other cities need evaluation by local stakeholders. Not every policy will work for Fayetteville and maintain what attracted me to the region in
the first place. My professional background facilitating stakeholder engagement, managing large-scale economic negotiations, and experience
living in multiple areas will add value to the Planning Commission.

Dear Planning Commission Nominating Committee,
I am writing to express my interest in the Citizen at Large Planning Commission position. The Planning
Commission is crucial to ensuring Fayetteville continues its growth while preserving what makes it special. My
professional background and personal experience as a renter add valuable competencies to the Commission.
What do U.S. trade agreement negotiations and the Planning Commission have in common? Both begin with
stakeholder engagement and result in promoting economic opportunities. During my time with the U.S.
Department of Commerce (DOC) and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), I actively worked in public-
private ecosystems to structure win-win strategic partnerships. I offer experience leveraging government, non-
profit, business, and constituent stakeholders to identify solutions. Throughout my academic and professional
training, I focused on building expertise in economic impact strategies. I contribute an understanding of local
government revenue mechanisms and experience at the state, federal, and international level understanding
what levers to pull for economic growth.
As a native Arkansan, I witnessed the growth of Northwest Arkansas (NWA), but it wasn’t until the opportunity
arose to work remotely that I chose to put down roots in Fayetteville (December 2021). I chose Fayetteville for
its cost of living, quality of life, affordable housing, walking trails, manageable traffic, accessible regional
airport, and continued economic growth. From the library to the trails, Fayetteville offered me the opportunity
to live well while remaining connected to the world through XNA.
Before moving to Fayetteville, I lived in several cities including Conway, AR; Little Rock, AR; Russellville,
AR; Tacoma, WA, Alexandria, VA; Arlington, VA; and Washington, DC. While working for the DOC and
SBA, I frequently traveled to cities throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. These experiences provided
a comprehensive understanding of the benefits and challenges associated with economic expansion.
My neighborhood off Rupple Road is a positive example of housing development. My rental house is
comparable in price to apartments with the added benefit of being in a diverse community of young
professionals, retirees, single families, and college students. Formerly a cow pasture, the area now offers
proximity to multiple schools, grocery stores, and access to the walking/biking trail system. The trail system is a
huge benefit, providing a safe space comparable to biking trails I used in Geneva, Switzerland. The
infrastructure expansion of Weddington road immensely improved rush hour traffic.
In contrast, living in DC in the H Street Northeast Mixed-Use Housing NMU-5A/H-H Zone presented many
challenges. Prior to moving, my commute averaged 2 hours in heavy traffic, my car was damaged by street
parking, and I lived in a food desert. I chose the recently built H Street apartment complex for access to public
transportation, off-street parking, and proximity to Whole Foods. While an improvement, living on H Street
came with challenges. The apartment building shared the block with a single-family house and a rehabilitation
facility. My apartment window was directly across from the bedroom window on the single-family home,
offering no privacy. I regularly had to navigate a large homeless population as I exited my building and waited
for public transportation. Additionally, the building parking fees continued to increase, making it economically
infeasible to afford parking plus rent each month.
When I think back to why it felt exhausting to live in DC, the mixed-use housing zone building was not the
problem. A broader conversation was needed in DC regarding resource allocation, provision of government
services, and development. The disjointed approach to implementation encouraged my departure.
As Fayetteville continues to expand, the Planning Commission faces policy decisions regarding land use,
housing, infrastructure, and transportation. Policies that work for other cities need evaluation by local
stakeholders. Not every policy will work for Fayetteville and maintain what attracted me to the region in the
first place. My professional background facilitating stakeholder engagement, managing large-scale economic
negotiations, and experience living in multiple areas will add value to the Planning Commission.

Ashlyn Holeyfield

I've lived in the City of Fayetteville for 31 years, living near and working in the Town and Gown area. I'm familiar with the area, including its
benefits and issues, from the perspective of a resident, and a professor working with students. I was a professor at the University of Arkansas
for about 30 years, serving as vice chair of the School of Journalism and Strategic Media for about 9 years. I earned a Masters in Advertising
and a PhD in Mass Media from Michigan State University.
Why would you like to be considered for appointment to this committee? *
My work experience provides an understanding of the UA and how it operates, as well as the relationship between faculty, staff, and students
and the city. Living in Fayetteville for over 30 years and witnessing the growth and changes over that period gives me a long-term resident's
perspective of the city and UA as well. As a retiree, I'd like to serve my community. I believe my varied perspectives and work experience
enable me to represent the interests of multiple constituencies.

As a current horticulture student nearing completion of my degree, I bring both academic perspective and practical knowledge to the table.
My studies have focused on woody plant conservation, native plant systems, and sustainable land management. While I haven’t graduated
yet, I’ve already applied my learning in different fields, from microfarming experiments to working with farmers at Spring Creek food hub. I
have a keen eye for local landscape design as a lifelong Fayetteville resident.
Why would you like to be considered for appointment to this committee? *
I’m very invested in our local biodiversity, regenerative practices, and the intersection of urban planning and ecology. I really do well in
collaborative environments where independence and creativity are valued, and I’m committed to ideas that are consistent and make
Fayetteville a better place. I have a vision, a drive, and would completely dedicate myself to this position.

Professionally, I bring strong project management and construction management experience, which I believe aligns well with the board’s

I am an environmental scientist with 20 years of professional experience in the environmental arena within the public and private sector. I
have spent my career trying to bridge the divide between industry and the public sector by using creative and tactful solutions that
demonstrate environmental benefits to both parties in a way that is mutually beneficial. I am a lover of the natural environment, yet am a
