Minutes of the Meeting
Natural Resources Committee
A Subcommittee of the Strategic Advisory Committee
Geneva City Hall
May 6, 2015
1. Meeting called to order at 7:05 pm.
2. Geneva NRC Members Present: Jay Womack, Bill Doeckel, Carrie Carter and Tom Dickinson.
Absent: Adam McMillen, Jeanine McMillen, John Frankenthal, Lauren Jennison and Dan
Ludwig. Also present Leslie Juby SPAC liaison and Jim Clesen (prospective member), Terry
Flanagan and Colin Campbell (Monarch Butterfly Project)
3. Amendments to the meeting.
The Monarch Butterfly Project was presented by Terry Flanagan and Colin Campbell. They are
trying to get funding through US Fish and Wildlife to buy plants and seeds. Looking for a
location to plant the plants (would like to use part of Prairie Green) and a group of volunteers.
The project needs City approval and they would like to present the project to SPAC in
September or October. The Park District is on board and there will be a seminar in August.
NRC would like to hear more as the project evolves. We cannot make a commitment at this
time.
4. There were no meeting minutes from January.
5. Active Projects:
Earth Day Event 2015
The event was a huge success. The Fun Run went well. The farm animals did not
come. It is important to have some animals present as this appears to be a big draw
for families. Birds of prey were interesting but people want to pet the animals.
Tentative date for next year is April 16th.
Eastside Fire Station Natural Landscaping Project
Dan Ludwig used herbicide on the invasive plants and the fire department burned the
area.
2nd & Franklin Natural Landscaping Project
Jay Womack, the McMillen family and Carrie Carter worked on this garden and burned
the area.
River Clean-up Day

We will try to coordinate through the National River Cleanup. Try to schedule for
September.
Rain Barrels for sales
1. Need to promote rain barrels.
2. Contact Peaceful Parlor as a possible outlet. Scentimental Gardens may be
interested in selling the rain barrels also.
Rain Barrels on Parade
Next event will be 2016.
Greening Geneva
1. We will need to keep an eye on last year’s trees – the one by George Kay is not
looking good.
2. Discussed planting trees at schools – Jeanine has had some positive feedback.
3. It was suggested that we use tags for the trees we plant. The tag would indicate
the species of the tree, that it was planted by the NRC and the year it was planted.
Tom will investigate these trees.
