Sister Cities, Assembly Advisory Board Meeting Minutes May 24, 2017 5:00 Hospital Conference Room Committee Member: : Maria Uchytil (Co-Chair) Marsha Squires (UAS Liaison/Member) Eli Olson (Secretary) Barbara Burnett (Member) Sue Baxter (Co-Chair), Miranda McCarty (Member) I. Call to order a. At 5pm II. Agenda Changes III. Approval of the Minutes from Eli a. Approved unanimously IV. RCMP visit a. The RCMPS have expressed their intention to come to the 4th of July celebration, however it is uncertain if the Mayor of Whitehorse will make the trip with them this year. i. They will arrive at 9am at the Juneau airport to meet with our committee and with the JPD representatives, after which, JPD will shuttle them around town ii. Maria will coordinate the RCMPS harbor boat transfer to Douglas to attend the BBQ at the church iii. Marsha will oversee contacting the parade committee to let them know the RCMPs will march in this year’s parade as well iv. Sue will contact JPD to coordinate them picking up the RCMPs at the airport v. After getting a headcount for the number of RCMPs to attend the parade, Beth McEwen will need to be informed for the BBZ at the church vi. Goody bags for the RCMPs will need to be created with a variety of items from different retailers throughout Juneau, such as UAS items, Alaska Brewery, Taku Smokeries, etc. b. An offer will be made to the Rainforest Classic hockey team members to march in the parade with the trophy they won this year i. Another offer will be made to any exchange students who would like to march in the parade V. Princes Sofia a. No new information has surfaced yet, so the topic has been tabled for a later date VI. Sister City Status Discussion – New Directions – Marsha a. Guidelines for selecting of new sister cities i. Get UAS input if possible ii. Do not include tuition discount in sister cities decision making iii. Have long term contacts iv. Multiple contacts 1. Have at least 2 contacts/communications per year and have it be reciprocated a. It can be: emails, phone calls, personal visits cards, etc. v. We want a multi-faceted relationship 1. To include; personal, cultural, trade, etc. 2. We want the relationships to be mutually beneficial vi. Define “relationships” 1. events 2. exchanges vii. we would like to work with the current exchange between the school districts of Juneau and nishikopei Japan and possibly help enhance them in some way viii. we would like to work with cities that have commonalities with Juneau, possibly in fisheries, climate, etc. ix. we want both sides to benefit, not just a one sided x. we would ask about their infrastructure, (their sister cities committee) xi. commit to a long-term communication for both sides, 1. is it within their power, and do they have their city governments support? 2. make a typical 15-year commitment VII. Canada Day a. Contact JPD i. Sue will contact JPD and request info about Canada day b. PR in Juneau XI. New directions • We as a committee would like to have a sister cities email that can be used throughout the years, even if our members change. • But who will manage it, and how it will be set up it to be determined • Miranda will contact Lori to try to get the new email for our committee XII.
