The hidden figure was found 621 times in the kid's area!  For Summer Reading, we are running two challenges, one for ages 3 and older and a BINGO for babies two and younger. During June we had 826 people register for the 3+ program, logging a total of 5,219 days of reading, and 49 register for the baby program, completing 171 activities so far.  300 people turned out for the Reptile Man on June 16. He gave a 40-minute presentation and then stayed for about an hour for people to have one-on-one interactions with his reptiles.  We had 24 teens attend our Pride Party for Rainbow Community. They made hats out of construction paper, decorated flags, and made colorful pom-poms out of yarn. Attendance for Rainbow Community continues to be great!  As part of our summer reading programming, we had Justin Pinero volunteer to come and give a talk on Fossil Hunting in the PNW. He is a local rockhound and gave a great presentation on different spots in Washington and Oregon to find fossils, tools you might need and brought a wide selection of fossils for people to view. We had fifty people attend. He had a great message about how looking for rocks and fossils is a great activity for enjoying the outdoors, it is relatively low cost and promotes mindfulness.  We had our first Junk Journaling workshop on June 22. It was a great chance for people to meet and chat while working on a new creative project. It was a nice mix of teens and adults. We have our second one on August 3.  Our Romance Book Club met and read an archeology themed romance book, Digging Dr. Jones, by Olivia Jackson. While the writing of this one was not up to par, we did have a great time discussing what we didn’t like about the book. We had our first male person join our discussion and had nine people attending, a record number.  Our book club, Books & Banter, read Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell for June. We did an extra step where we invited members to come and enjoy some popcorn and watch the film production of Hamnet and then we had our discussion of the book. Having this multi-media experience enriched the reading of the book because the movie was able to act out a portion of the play Hamlet, which brought further information to the character’s actions, and the book brought so much more detail than the movie could give. Our discussion was richer due to this experience. One of our members sent an email the following day, I enjoyed the Hamnet discussion last evening! It was so nice being able to hear and share about the questions you posed and the answers - plus tangents - that helped us all understand more about the the time period, and the culture, especially concerning the differences between how people lived in a city versus how they lived on farms. The author's writing style was a joy to encounter. I don't remember reading anything with her particular way of constructing sentences. I also enjoyed talking to the women at our end of the table, both before and after the discussion. - and it was nice that Kathy remembered me from times the book group met in the Marion J.O. room. Thank you, too, for the time and energy you used to arrange for the movie to be shown prior to the discussion. It was probably a long day for you, which I believe all of us at the discussion appreciated. Next Steps/Coming Soon  The Summer Picnic is coming up on July 28. Our entertainer this year is Angel Ocasio, and he will be doing a bilingual (English/Spanish) family comedy show.  Concerts at the Lake start July 9, and we will have the Mobile Library out at every one! Community Impact Highlights  We got a nice email from a story time regular with a photo of a story time we did out at Victoria Freeman Park. In this transition we upgraded a 20+ year old system with new equipment and communication lines at a cost of about $5100.  We purchased a new AV cart for our admin team to be able to work remotely around the building.  We’ve been granted up to $4800 by the Secretary of State’s office to be able to send Jo and Jakob ($2400 each) to ALSC in Buffalo this coming fall. Internal Goals and Strategies Recent Accomplishments  We added an intern through the ESD’s YES (youth employment services) program. He works 6 hours a week, and his job duties include shelving and working at the registration center for Summer Reading.  Youth Services staff did a total of 11 school visits in the months of May and June, visiting Mark Morris, Lexington, St. Rose, St. Helens, Olympic, Mint Valley, Columbia Heights, and Mt. Solo and talking to about 2,199 students. Reception was very positive, with many kids excited for this year’s theme, Unearth a Story.  Becky attended the 2026 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago at the end of June. She served on the jury for the 2026 YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award and had the rewarding experience of honoring the winners with her fellow jurors. She also attended a number of educational sessions and will have a report out next month. Next Steps/Coming Soon  Jakob Collins received a National Games and Libraries Project Fellowship through the Washington State Library is attending a workshop at UW-Madison in July. Event Photos
