Wednesday, May 11, 2022 5:00 PM Virtual, Zoom Meeting The City of Madison is holding the Public Safety Review Committee meeting virtually to help protect our community from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. 1. Konkel seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved. This report is attached to the minutes as a reference. 5. 71286 Report from the Madison Police Department including information on recent gun violence and an update on strategic planning Attachments: 2022-05 PSRC Meeting Notes.pdf chiefUpdate20221stQtr.pdf Captain Drescher shared information to the committee from the attached reports. 6. 70758 Amending the Police Department’s 2022 Operating Budget and authorizing City of Madison Page 2 PUBLIC SAFETY REVIEW Meeting Minutes - Approved May 11, 2022 COMMITTEE the Mayor and Chief of Police to accept up to $20,000 in funding from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for Beltline flex lane traffic safety enforcement. Lieutenant FIore shared information to the committee regarding the resolution on the amended safety ordinance on the beltline flex-lane. 7. 71356 Police Department website information Captain Drescher shared a tutorial on the police departments website pointing out where information can be found. There was discussion on pictures of officers being shown on the website. The ability to post all officers pictures may be difficult to maintain however specialty units pictures may be possible to add. NEW BUSINESS 8. 70827 Amending the Police Department’s 2022 operating budget, and authorizing the Mayor and Chief of Police to accept a New Blue Project grant award of $10,000 for promoting women in policing and advancing transformative policing Sergeant Hamilton and Detective Levett attended the meeting. A presentation was shared with the committee. The presentation is attached to refer to. Alder Benford made a motion to recommend to council to adopt. Konkel seconded the motion. There was unanimous consent for this motion. 9. 70882 Supporting the reasonable regulation of firearms to assist in helping to remedy public health concerns stemming from firearms violence in the City of Madison, and authorizing the City Attorney, in consultation with the Mayor, to join the City as amicus in cases related to firearm regulation which promote or impact Madison’s policies and programs to help combat firearms violence. City Attorney Haas shared information to the committee regarding the resolution. Alder Benford made a motion to recommend approval. Konkel seconded the motion. There was unanimous consent from the committee. COMMITTEE REPORTS 11. 71287 Report from Alders Alder Benford mentioned that he would like for the committee to discuss ways in which the committee could involve the public with hosting community meetings or possibly listening sessions. He would like to see more of the public attending meetings to hear opinions on matters. It was requested PSRC support staff Hardiman set up an upcoming budget subcommittee meeting in a few weeks to go over the information. 10. 70796 Report from the Co-Chairs Attachments: 2022 Public Safety Review Committee Chair Schedule.pdf Chair Giesfeldt went over the attached Chair schedule. There was discussion on items being referred to the PSRC from Council and how this could best be accomplished. Giesfeldt indicated that he and the other Co-Chair Milton would work together by monitoring council agendas and work with other city agencies and Alders to see that appropriate items are being referred to the committee. NEXT MEETING 13. 71288 Future Agenda Items Discussion Items - PSRC liaison between city on safety issues. Sexual Assault on community outreach. Collection of information from MFD/MPD website; specific data Alder Benford community input. ADJOURNMENT Alder Benford made a motion to adjourn. Konkel seconded the motion.
