Requests on specific item updates for future agendas ADJOURN Page 1 of 4 MINUTES Historic Preservation Commission 7:30 AM - Tuesday, June 9, 2026 City Hall, 1225 6th Avenue The Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Marion, Linn County, Iowa met on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 7:30 AM, at City Hall, 1225 6th Avenue, with the following members present: Kathy Wilson, Bethany Jordan, Scott Foens, Nick Dusil, and Robby PRESENT: Marvin ABSENT: STAFF PRESENT: Su-Lin Featherston CALL TO ORDER Featherston called the meeting to order at 7:32 a.m. ROLL CALL REGULAR AGENDA 1 Minutes Motion to approve minutes from the May 12, 2026 meeting. Moved by Foens, seconded by Dusil, to approve minutes from the May 12, 2026 meeting. Approved unanimously 2 Discussion: 2025-2028 Work Plan Featherston recalled that the Commission discussed taking just a few items from the plan to work on first. The first item has begun with an article in the Marion Messenger. Discussion was held about doing a "windshield" survey of historic districts, which Jordan considered applying for a CLG grant for a historic survey. Discussion continued on which items members will gather information about. Featherston will add specific items to future agendas as they are ready for discussion. 3 HPC-CLG Training Update Jordan gave an update on the Preserve Iowa Summit that was recently held as CLG training. OTHER BUSINESS Brick streets project update Featherston shared a memo that Mike Barkalow had given to Council for a recent update. She said that the project is being taken on by Jake Hahn now. ADJOURN Featherston adjourned the meeting at 8:08 a.m. Respectfully submitted by, Ama Bartlett, Administrative Assistant Page 2 3 of 2 4 AGENDA MEMO Meeting Type: Historic Preservation Commission Meeting Date: July 14, 2026 Staff Contact: Jake Hahn, Deputy City Engineer Department: Public Works ITEM TITLE: Discussion regarding an Interpretive Effort in regards to the NEPA conditions associated with the Alburnett Road Extension Project STRATEGIC PLAN ALIGNMENT: Focus Area: 1 – Vibrant Community Goal Area: 1.2 – Enhance educational, arts, culture, and recreational opportunities (e.g., walkable trails) in the community SUMMARY: The City was awarded federal funds to construct the Alburnett Road Extension project with a funding agreement executed in June of 2024. As part of the federal review process, we are required to completion conditions stated in the NEPA Approval due to the impacts to existing structures. As part of the effort, the City is proposing to complete an interpretive effort to further highlight a historic property in Marion. Last winter HPC met to discuss which property to highlight, and 1095 6th Avenue was chosen (former courthouse site, etc.). This discussion will detail potential options for the interpretive effort.
