3. Approval of the June 28, 2018 meeting minutes
Mayor Barrett, seconded by Mr. Sain, moved to approve the minutes from June 28,
2018 meeting. There were no objections.
4. Introductions of M. Singleton and J. Jordan: “Ingredients to Success” – Assistant Chief Ray Banks

5. Milwaukee County’s OAAA’s update (YTD 2018) – Nicole Brookshire

Ms. Brookshire said that she has been working closely with Mr. Peeples and the Office

of Administration in regards to black male achievement initiatives throughout the
county. Provided a highlight of what has been accomplished through 2018 to date with
the following key points:
There is a Racial Equity Assessment & Planning in session that includes national
memberships with Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) and Policy Link.
Racial Equity events such as Race to Lead, Healthiest Wisconsin Summit, Stop Hate,
and Facing Race. Educational Webinars such as Funding Black Prosperity, Stop Hate
& Racism, Race to Lead, Campaign Black Male Achievement - RUMBLE
There have been monthly local and regional discussions to align to the Racial Equity
Vision.
Implementation process includes employee engagement survey, about 100 leaders
participated in 3 training cycle in the fall of 2018.
Among the community engagement activities there were:

Second Chance Expungement Clinic
Campaign Black Male Achievement RUMBLE

Pathways for Fathers & Families Community Partner Kick-Off
Boys and Men of Color Week
Marquette University's Restorative Justice Event
Among Statewide Partnerships the office sits in different committees such as the
State of Wisconsin's Public Infrasturcture and Construction Workforce Advisory
Committee - Foxconn Development; Wisconsin Minority Unemployment Taskforce, and
the Southeastern Regional Public Transportation Discussions.
Under Social Justice Initiatives the OAAA partnered with the Wisconsin Policy Forum
on an Expungement Report - A Fresh Start; the report was presented before the
Milwaukee County Judiciary Committee as well as the City level and Intergovernmental
Committee with the County to adopt a resolution seeking to loosen the requirements
for the expungement process to facilitate re-entry into the workforce.
Two grants were received: House of Correction's Dept. of Justice Re-entry Pilot Grant,
Milwaukee County JAG; with community partners there were three grants totaling $2.9
millions for Dept of Labor Re-entry Gant, Wisconsin Partnership Program Grant (via
UW-Madison) and Obama Foundation Educational Grant.
For 2019, OAAA plans to sustain community partnership and African American
community events, finalize the office relocation of office space, complete the staffing
process and operations, analyze racial equity survey results, implement countywide
racial equity training and develop a countywide racial equity action plan.
All members present expressed their interest on joining their efforts and representaion
to the Collaborative model that Ms. Brookshire presented.

BMAAC agreed to support the expungement legislation as Ms. Brookshire presented it,
with a letter of support and possibility of members attending the committee to testify,
when the legislation is presented.
6. Boys and Men of Color Week: Recap – Nicole Brookshire

Milwaukee Boys and Men of Color Week took place October 1- October 6, 2018 - Be
the Hero of Your Story. Hosted by different agencies and different locations.
The week included Breakfast, networking session, discussion encouraging men and
boys of color to improve their health, reduce stress, increase quality of life.
The breakfast kick off started with 40-60 attendees.
The mayor was present, along with other agencies like United Way, MATC, Milwaukee
and Greater Milwaukee Area, and the Milwaukee Health Department.
7. Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative: logo and updates – Mike Peeples

There were 463 attendees. There were a lot of new fathers and younger fathers in
attendance this year.
Mr. Peeples asked feedback from members for future updates of the website/ social
media outlets as well as the logo.
8. My Brother’s Keeper updates: website/social media and photoshoot (RE-shoot) – Mike Peeples

Mr. Peeples asked council to review the different priorities of the BMK plan (provided)
to continue to match the work and efforts these subcommittees started in past years.
Mr. Peeples asked member's input to refresh the website/social media and logos that
would be inclusive to the council's intent; he asked members to provide their feedback
after reviewing the different designs he distributed.

Chair asked the office of administration to seek out philanthropic support so that in
conjunction with CDBG monies, BMAAC initiative can be leverage.
