Members present: John Gurda, John McGivern, Clayborn Benson and Reuben Harpole
Members excused: Carrie Fix and Martin Palm
1. 170611 Resolution assigning the honorary street name "Dr. Lester Carter Drive"
to North 24th Street from West Burleigh Street to West Auer Avenue in
the 7th Aldermanic District.
Sponsors: THE CHAIR
Sherman Morton, aide to Ald. Rainey, testified in support of this re-naming, due to Dr.
Carter's many years of service to the profession and to the community.
Yance Marti, Dept. of Public Works, noted that the dept. has no objections.
Mr. Benson moved, seconded by Mr. Harpole, to recommend approval of this
nomination. There motion passed unanimously.
2. 170442 Resolution relating to renaming the 809 N. Broadway building as the
Greg “Ziggy” Zyszkiewicz Municipal Building.
Sponsors: Ald. Donovan
Ald. Donovan said that Mr. Zyszkiewicz had led an exceptional life and died doing what
he loved - his job. He joined him on neighborhood walks and was an exemplary city
employee.
Mr. Gurda read a statement raising questions about the appropriateness of the
renaming.
Mr. Harpole moved for approval, seconded by Mr. Gurda. Tied. 2-2 (Mr. Harpole and
Mr. McGivern voting "aye"; Mr. Gurda and Mr. Benson voting "no").

In the event that Common Council members who are not members of this committee attend this
meeting, this meeting may also simultaneously constitute a meeting of the Common Council or
any of the following committees: Community and Economic Development, Finance and
Personnel, Judiciary and Legislation, Licenses, Public Safety, Public Works, Zoning,
Neighborhoods & Development, and/or Steering and Rules. Whether a simultaneous meeting is
occurring depends on whether the presence of one or more of the Common Council member
results in a quorum of the Common Council or any of the above committees, and, if there is a
quorum of another committee, whether any agenda items listed above involve matters within that
committee’s realm of authority. In the event that a simultaneous meeting is occurring, no action
other than information gathering will be taken at the simultaneous meeting.
