All 6 members present. 1. 201468 Substitute resolution assigning the honorary street name "Cleotha Adams" to 5th Street from West Center Street to West Locust Street in the 6th Aldermanic District. Sponsors: THE CHAIR Sheila Adams Gardner, daughter of the honoree, said Mr. Cleotha Adams is the owner and founder of Adams Auto Body and is the oldest African American auto body shop in Milwaukee. Mr. Adams's tutelage has led to other individuals opening their own auto shops. Cleotha is a strong member of the Christian community and moved to Milwaukee and began his career at American Motors. He opened Adams Body Shop in June 1966. He has received many honors and awards over the years. Ms. Devon Duke, his other daughter, mentioned her father has uplifted the lives of many individuals and has employed individuals whom others may not have employed. The city noted there will be a total of four signs and can make an honorary sign in his shop. Move to grant, by Mr. Harpole, seconded by Mr. Benson. There were no objections. 2. 201557 Substitute resolution assigning the honorary street name "Bishop William Rogers" to Center St. from North 2nd St. to North Holton St. in the 6th Aldermanic District. Sponsors: THE CHAIR City of Milwaukee Page 1 CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON Meeting Minutes April 21, 2021 THE NAMING OF PUBLIC BUILDINGS, FACILITIES AND STREETS Ms. Ruth Simpson, Bishop Roger's granddaughter, said he served faithfully for 47 years before his death and he did a live one-hour service for a number of years. He has contributed greatly to the city of Milwaukee through his service in the inner city through his humanitarian efforts. Bishop Howard Gracie said it has been a tremendous blessing to support this application and many sons and daughters in both the U.S. and abroad got their start in Bethlehem Temple Church. Pastor Charisse Brown spoke to the Bishop's support and encouragement of youth in his congregation and of his support for her personally. He let her speak to the congregation at age of 18, even during a prestigious congregation meeting; he paid attention to his sheep. Dr. Tony Rogers is the daughter of the Bishop and she filed the application; she trains and teaches others and has written two books due to what he has instilled in her. Marquis Young, the current pastor, also present. Move to grant, by Mr. Benson, seconded by Mr. Harpole. There were no objections. 3. Discussion and possible vote on the future of Citizen Advisory Committee. Mr. Gurda mentioned about the new Council ordinance relating to official street namings directly by Council members. Mr. O'Neill asked if the Council committee had the same kind of interaction with the public as this body does, as he sees that serves a valuable function. Mr. Benson noted that this body acts under the purview of the Council. Mr. O'Neill likes the purpose this body serves and he is perfectly happy continuing to serve, as is Ms. Fix. Whether a simultaneous meeting is occurring depends on whether the presence of one or more of the Common Council member results in a quorum of the Common Council or any of the above committees, and, if there is a quorum of another committee, whether any agenda items listed above involve matters within that committee’s realm of authority.
