The Pledge of Allegiance was said followed by a prayer led by Pastor Marlon Lock of Unity Gospel House of Prayer. Ms. Bria Smith was also recognized for winning the 2109 Vel Phillips Trailblazer Award Presentation of a commendation to MCTS bus driver Shannon Johnson. Mr. Johnson witnessed a serious motor vehicle accident while on duty and with the help of others, pried open the vehicle door and pulled the driver to safety, thus preventing potential further injury.
