(11th Aldermanic District) Sponsors: THE CHAIR A motion was made by ALD. HAMILTON that this Appointment be RECOMMENDED FOR CONFIRMATION. This motion PREVAILED by the following vote: Aye 8- Murphy, Kovac, Davis, Hamilton, Bauman, Witkowski, Zielinski and Bohl No 0 2. 141415 Communication from the Charter School Review Committee transmitting its 2013-2014 Annual Report. Sponsors: THE CHAIR Individuals present: Jeanette Mitchell, Sue Gramling and Jarett Fields - Charter School Review Committee Janice Erin - contracts with the Charter School Review Committee Rachel Wagner - principal of North Point Lighthouse Charter School Rasheeda Evans, Carine Boswell and Howard Fuller, - Milwaukee Collegiate Academy Roll call taken at 3:40 P.M. Erica Whitehead and George Henton - King's Academy Salim Mucan and David Chief - Milwaukee Math and Science Academy Father Tom Miller - represents MICAH, which is schools and parents united - concerned about lack of notice for meetings of Charter School Review Committe Jack Norman - not all information is being provided on the schools in terms of how long they have been in operation whether a voucher school or a charter school or City of Milwaukee Page 1 STEERING & RULES COMMITTEE Meeting Minutes January 15, 2015 expulsion rates of specific schools. He provided the commitee with a document which Ald. Bohl moved to make part of the record (Exhibit 1) Larry Hoffman - Schools and Communities United - submitted "Fulfill the Promise" booklet (Exhibit 2) which was made part of the record by Ald. Kovac Marva Herndon, Schools and Communites United - submitted a letter (Exhibit 3) regarding Milwaukee Math & Science Academy (MMSA) - student academic performance is poor, teacher return rate is dismal, financial stability is in question, Charter Management Organization and schools are experiencing FBI raids. Regarding Northpoint Lighthouse, poorest scores of all charter schools, student retention an issue, site is unsafe for a number of reasons, money flowing out of the city, children not benefiting Gail Hicks, Schools and Communities United - Milwaukee Collegiate Academy has been a school since 2004 and has been failing not meeting expectations (Exhibit 4) Chris - questions accountability and liability for charter schools Shawn Roberts, Milwaukee Charter Schools nonprofit organization - suspension and expulsion rates information is available online; rates are lower; independent charter school growth and achievement is higher than state average; keep focus on providing quality A motion was made by ALD. KOVAC that this Communication be RECOMMENDED FOR PLACING ON FILE.
