YOUTH COUNCIL
Wednesday, May 24, 2017 4:30 PM Room 303, City Hall
1. Call to Order at 4:42 PM
2. Roll Call
Present 8 - Estremera-Maldonado, Haywood II, Hoeschen, McDade, Gloria Gonzales,
Brown, Gambrell-Toliver and Alcantara
Absent 2 - Lofton and Truss
Excused 1 - Devine Handy
3. CDBG Reprogramming Update
Mr. Mahan, Community Development Grants Administration, director
Due to the Federal government budget not being release yet and CDGA funds not
being awarded, reprogramming for youth council funds will have to be on hold until
probably the new term of council members begin in September - October.
4. Discussion of Water Quality in Schools
Students from different milwaukee High Schools came to the Youth Council to
express their frustration regarding led in the water in their communities including their
schools. It was expressed by several students that MPS administration has been
uncooperative with responding their questions and concerns regarding when will the
problem be solve. the consumption of contaminated water leads to attention deficit
disorder, concentration issues that some of the students have already being
experiencing.
The group along with few school staff also testified that the conditions the students
are faced with are not conducive for a productive learning experience.
The students are seeking the support and collaboration of the Milwaukee Youth
Council to help them reach to MPS administration to get answers to this problem.
5. Recruitment Update
It is projected that several vacancies will be available, as a result of council members
graduating from High School this summer; those graduating this term are encouraged
to make recommendations from their peers and class mates to apply to the Youth
Council.

6. 2017 MYC priorities updates -
a. Creation of panels within MPS schools to reduce public violence, segregation and
increase intergration.
b. Create/implement a car theft #NoFreeRide and safe driving campaign
c. To repair/clean up public parks/tot lots with the cooperation of MKE plays, if possible
d. Cognitive behavioral therapy

In the event that Common Council members who are not members of this committee attend
this meeting, this meeting may also simultaneously constitute a meeting of the Common
Council or any of the following committees: Community and Economic Development,
Finance and Personnel, Judiciary and Legislation, Licenses, Public Safety, Public Works,
Zoning, Neighborhoods & Development, and/or Steering and Rules. Whether a simultaneous
meeting is occurring depends on whether the presence of one or more of the Common Council
member results in a quorum of the Common Council or any of the above committees, and, if
there is a quorum of another committee, whether any agenda items listed above involve matters
within that committee’s realm of authority. In the event that a simultaneous meeting is
occurring, no action other than information gathering will be taken at the simultaneous
meeting.
Upon reasonable notice, efforts will be made to accommodate the needs of persons with
disabilities through sign language interpreters or auxiliary aids. For additional information or

Street. Parking tickets must be validated in the first floor Information Booth in City Hall.
Persons engaged in lobbying as defined in s. 305-43-4 of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances
are required to register with the City Clerk's Office License Division. Registered lobbyists
appearing before a Common Council committee are required to identify themselves as such.
