Historical Commission Meeting Minutes July 2, 2025 CALL TO ORDER The regularly scheduled meeting of the Historical Commission was held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. Chairperson Flynn called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM. ATTENDANCE Chairman Flynn took the roll call. It indicated as follows: Commission Attendance PRESENT: Chairman Flynn, Commissioner Baur, Commissioner Frasier, Commissioner Walker, Commissioner Zander, Commissioner Hayes ABSENT: Other Attendance PRESENT: Jeanne Steffens, Eric J. Guenther, Village Administrator PUBLIC COMMENTARY Jeanne Steffens commented on the following items: • Suggested the Commission consider expanding Saturday hours during the summer, possibly adding crafts for kids and lemonade and cookies; • The radio program at Fremont library was successful, 60+ attendees, MHC was not mentioned, no brochures were handed out; • Offered loan of Brownie camera for use in school presentations; • Has been unable to confirm the existence of an airport in the area of Route 60 and Midlothian Road. Discussion regarding access to Cardinal Mundelein mass book, approved without objection. NEW BUSINESS Mundelein Community Days Parade 4th of July Parade (July 6, 2025) need to be in west lot of the high school at 12:30 PM., position 20, need to verify John Gola will participate with his Model A, his brother may also want to participate with his Model A, Commissioner Hayes will verify. Fremont Library Presentation - October 1, 2025 Library has requested the Cemetery Walk be presented at the library on October 1, 2025 at 2:00 PM, in one of the large rooms. Lure of the Local Lure of the Local theme is "Portals" need to determine participation and what to display. Other Discussed possibility of approaching MHS for a museum field trip or shared program, Chairman Flynn will contact the History Department at MHS to ascertain if there is any interest. Chairperson Flynn called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM. ATTENDANCE Chairman Flynn took the roll call. It indicated as follows: Commission Attendance PRESENT: Chairman Flynn, Commissioner Baur, Commissioner Frasier, Commissioner Walker, Commissioner Zander, Commissioner Hayes ABSENT: Other Attendance PRESENT: Ron Salski, Rob Foster, and Nate Neworth from Mundelein Park and Recreation District, Eric Guenther, Village of Mundelein, and Jeanne Steffens PUBLIC COMMENTARY Jeanne Steffens advised had read an article on the People of Mundelein Facebook page regarding an airport at the intersection of Route 60 and Midlothian Road that closed sometime in the 70's or 80's. No one on the Commission has any recollection of such an airport. It was agreed Jeanne will follow up with the author of the article to acquire more information. PARK DISTRICT REPORT Ron Salki, Rob Foster, and Nate Neworth reported on repairs completed on the caboose and additional repairs to be completed this year and the initial steps taken to complete the landscaping installation, including approximate timelines for each project. General discussion followed on the rehabilitation of the caboose, including process, extent, possible timeline, and budget issues. Mundelein Park and Recreation District will put up the bunting on the museum for the birthday bash for Old #1 at the museum on July 5, 2025, and the set-up of the tents, tables, and chairs is to be determined. A process for assessing items available for acquisition on the internet was established. No items found on the internet by the group will be acquired without the pre-approval of the Commission and Mundelein Park and Recreation District.
