Mine Falls Park Advisory Committee- May 3, 2010 Minutes ATTENDEES : Sean Neary, Peter Testa, Leo Parker, Sherm Sewell, Greg Andruskevich, Joshua Segal, Mike Dillon, Mark Soucy, Dave Silva, Bill Luers, Ed Moran, John Barry Guest: Richard Larose, Todd Guay TOPIC LEAD DISCUSSION / CONCLUSIONS 1. Call to Order and Sean - Meeting called to order by committee chairman Sean Neary at 7:00 p.m. - April 5, 2010 Minutes approved unanimously with no changes. Approval of minutes 2. Park and Rec John Barry - Canal tree work awaiting approval from New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. - Nick was impressed by the number of volunteers for the April Trail Day. Chair notes Sean - Sean welcomed guest Todd Guay representing the Nashua Soccer Council which represents youth teams using Soifert Field. - Joshua wondered if the soccer organization could ask its members to help keep that area of the park clean. He mentioned he picks up 20 cigarette butts a day in the area. -Sean called the Whipple Street entrance and cul de sac parking area a troublesome area and doesn't blame the soccer people as the culprits but others who also use the area. The efforts of the soccer association are above board and he looks forward to a closer working relationship with them. - Todd stated he was going to mention the soccer groups helping to keep the area clean as they have 2,000 youth who play soccer there. Since they play on Saturdays they can help at Trail Days and make use of the time after games to clean the area. - The Gatehouse will be open for tours on the May 15 Trail Day from 9 a.m. to noon and Amy Gill and her son will be present and sherm Sewell will assist them. - Sean asked John Barry to check with Nick to see if a guest book will be in place for visitors to sign, - Sean summarized the April Trail Day as awesome. A lot of cleaning was done and every trail was raked for pine cones. - I'm very pleased with the outcome despite less than ideal weather conditions. Sean noted that you could tell it was raining until one stepped out from under the trees. He hopes the May Trail Day is as successful. - Dick Gillespie was unable to attend due to surgery but notified Sean that Nick should pursue the tree removal along the canal and alert the Conservation Commission. - The sub-0committee system was explained again and in an effort to get things rolling, the committee as a whole participated in planning for the Trail Day. - Dave Silva noted he was having trouble securing sponsors but Bill Luer stepped up and said his company Tamposi-Nash, will sponsor the May Trail Day. Sean noted the sponsors should be looking for a minimum of $25 gift certificates. Mark will handle Law Motor Freight. -John Barry to check with Nick to see if Trail Day T-shirts with the new sponsor can be screened for the May Trail Day. He also asked the sizing be reversed; having more smaller sizes than larger ones as has been the case in the past. - The group then discussed what tasks should be assigned for the Trail Day and Sean will e-mail a listing of the plans which will include the cleaning of the cove and canal areas, the B Trail and removal of Bittersweet Vine and other invasive plants. The removal of "fire" tree and other tasks will be tasked. Dave Silva, Peter Testa and others will assign crews accordingly depending upon the number of volunteers who show up. -Richard Larose, Mark Soucy and others credited Joshua Segal and Greg Andruskevich for going above the call of volunteer duty in cleaning of the Triangle area and uncovering a drain which many committee members were not aware even existed in the area. - Richard to check with Nick about jump sites youngsters are making in the park and to have the Park and Recreation Dept. refill the area.  2010 Meetings: Jan 4, Feb 1, March 1, April 5, May 3, June 7, Aug 2, Sept. 1 3, Oct.4, Nov. 1 , Dec 6 WEB SITE: http:// www.gonashua.com  2009 Trail Days April 1 7, May 15 , June 1 9, Aug. 14 , Sept. 2 5, Oct. 16. Sub Committee Reports All - Mark Soucy and Peter Testa for the Registration Committee reported all went well with the drawing system and that 55 volunteers took part in the Trail Day. Honor societies from both Nashua North and South High Schools were well represented as well as Cub Scout Pack 425 and Daniel Webster College. - Greg, Joshua and Mike displayed a new poster board giving an account of the last Trail Day and other activities. The subcommittee will also send out releases to the media again to get more volunteers to the May Trail Day. 5. Old Business All - Todd stated he was going to mention the soccer group helping to keep the area cleans as they have 2,000 youth who play soccer there. Since they play on Saturdays they can help at Trail Days and make use of the time after games to clean the area. - Sean explained the Whipple Street area in detail as to what is and is not part of the park, though the lad does belong to the city. Todd said his group will work to keep the area clean and offer community service certificates to the players. - Sean asked John to check if the department could supply the Nashua Soccer Council with the appropriate poke sticks and other tools which they can store and utilize on Saturdays to help keep the area clean. 6. New Business All - Dave cited the need for a guide to proper etiquette for bicyclists and and pedestrians in the park. This. - This was tabled to be brought up at the June 7 meeting - Mike Dillon explained changes he'd like to see in the brochure about the park after a discussion during the Earth Day event at the landfill with Kathy Berube. Mike was asked to highlight a brochure with his proposal for every committee member so it too, could be acted on at the June meeting. - Mention was made of more police presence in the park. - Those who volunteered at the Earth Day event included Sherm, Scott, and Mike and Patti Rogers. Sherm stated they could have made use of the poster boards. 7. 8. Adjournment Sean - The meeting was adjourned at 8:22 p.m. 9.
