“Where People Count” Community Development 1000 Civic Center Drive, Niles, Illinois 60714 Telephone (847) 588-8040 ● Fax (847) 588-8050 ● TDD (847) 588-8059 October 9, 2014 Building and Zoning committee meeting John Jekot- Trustee Rich Wlodarski - Community Development Assistant Director Bruce Sylvester - Senior Planner Tom Kanelos - Chairman Planning and Zoning Board Chuck Ostman - Community Development Director Joe Annunzio - Village Attorney Hadley Skeffington-Voss – Assistant Village Manager James Yoshida - Ghafari Associates John Jekot called the Building & Zoning committee meeting to order at 8:00 am, he made a motion to approve the minutes from June 5, 2014 meeting, Chuck Ostman seconded the motion and it was a unanimous vote to approve. Chuck Ostman gave a brief explanation to the committee that this committee is now the appeals board for any code or amendments that may be challenged, there up until now was no appeal process in place but with the passage of the building codes earlier this year that language was added. Chuck Ostman then introduced Mr. Yoshida who was asking for relief from the screening of roof top mechanical units he showed some pictures of the exterior of the building and explained how the parapet wall would block the units from the street view and also that to do any permanent screening there would have to be very extensive steelwork conducted to the roof structure to provide for wind and snow load that would be imposed with new screening. After some discussion it was voted on to approve the relief from this section of the code. Tom Kanelos asked if we should consider adding fees to any applicant who was asking for relief from any code or amendment, it was discussed there should be and the community development department agreed and will come back with some recommendations. Bruce Sylvester then gave an update of the progress of the zoning code along with the Milwaukee avenue study, there was some discussion of how and when there would be meeting for discussion and comments to the new zoning code along with open house meeting for the public to be conducted. Ross Klicker then gave and update on the Touhy Avenue corridor study and where we were in the process. www.vniles.com Chuck Ostman gave a quick update on the new adoption of the state plumbing code and explained that the state is not allowing any amendments to the new adopted code. Joe Annunzio asked if we could schedule another meeting for November and it was decided to have the meeting on Thursday November 6th 2014. John Jekot asked if there was anything else to bring up and there was not so he made a motion to adjourn seconded by Chuck Ostman and the meeting was adjourned at 9:15.
