HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE January 23, 2014 In attendance: Committee members Tony Hollenback, Carl Maniscalco, Kelly Mickle, Mark Williams, Rosemary Palicki Public attending: Louella Preston FAMILY SERVICES Tony Hollenback reported he is seeking a donation of a refrigerator where fresh foods can be stored allowing for the food pantry to offer produce and meat. Tony is working on cross training his staff so people can step in when and as needed. He and his staff are also working on finishing their section of the new Niles website. TEEN CENTER Mark Williams is working on the website design for the Teen Center. He and Kelly Mickle have reached out to Maine East High School in a cooperative effort to further develop and advance the teen/job program. They are also in discussion with Maine East about holding a local government day and offering an evening for Niles’ senior citizens to have dinner and attend a school play at Maine East. Concerns include the continued limitations on the number of hours staff can work due to restrictions for eligibility in IMRF. SENIOR CENTER Kelly Mickle is hoping to offer a resource Fair in April that will address many of the needs of our Seniors, such as Village Services available and how to contact local politicians. Kelly is investigating the possibility of partnering with local businesses to sponsor some of the Village events (luncheons, special presentations). She is also investigating finding additional revenue by offering membership to the Senior Center for non-residents. She is working with the Village Manager in discussing re-branding the Senior Center to make it a more inclusive and representative facility of the entire Village population. FITNESS CENTER Carl Maniscalco is involved in ongoing building maintenance and training his employees in customer service. He is hoping to offer some programs in cooperation with the Niles Park District and is working on developing a partnership with the local schools that centers on good health and perhaps a Health Fair. He continues to investigate employee incentives to increase the participation of the Wellness Program. He is exploring the possibility of using mobile classrooms for fitness classes at area businesses.
