MEETING SUMMARY

CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Jekot called the Human Services Committee meeting to order at 1:05 p.m.
Committee approved minutes from the April 13, 2017 meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
1) Update of Department FY2017 Goals
Tony Hollenback reported on Family Services activities including
o Family Services is beginning implementation of the electronic
medical records software called Foothold Technology
o They are working through the process of using the 25% of the
Village portion of the video gaming revenue for addiction support
o There was a lengthy discussion on the potential creation of a 501c3
non-profit foundation to support Village of Niles departments in
collecting donations, apply for grants and using funds to support the
mission of our services
o Tony and staff are planning for the 50th Anniversary celebration for
November 2, 2017
o Family Services hosted 3 Indigenous Grandmothers from May 15th
to May 19th to kick off their 50th Anniversary. The Grandmothers
spoke at the Senior Center, Family Services, Employee Wellness
Luncheon, the Niles Teen Center, Niles Public Library, Expanded
Learning and Gemini Middle School. The Grandmothers visit was
focused on community building to our children, teens, adults and
Seniors in Niles
Carl Maniscalco reported on Fitness Center activities including
o Fitness Center memberships have increased to 2423 as of July 13,
2017
o Expenses were down $216,000 or 13% in FY 2017
o New Aquatics Coordinator and Fitness/Group Exercise Coordinator
have been hired
o Minimum wage for part-time staff has been increased from $8.25 to
$10 per hour
o The Niles Cycling Classic will be held on July 20 at Oak Park. We
are expecting 400-500 cyclists and 1000 spectators throughout the
day long event. The family ride will be at 6:15 pm
o Online registration through MaxGalaxy is showing success and
helping to reduce waiting lines at the front counter
o Performance measures for FY17 have been completed and entered
into the Covalent software
Kelly Mickle reported on Senior Center activities including
o Kathy Thake, Kelly and Carl are conducting research about what a
Niles Community Center could look like. They visited a number of
area community centers.
o The Village Manager visited the Senior Center for a ½ day in early
June. He got to experience a busy day at the center.
o The NSC received an Age Options grant for $1183 for the Senior
Health Insurance program (SHIP)
o The NSC is working to partner with Advocate Memory Center on a
Musical Memories group
o The Community Block Party is scheduled for Saturday, August 26.
It will include a drone demonstration, bounce house, hotdogs and
more
o The current membership is at 938
Mark Williams reported on Teen Center activities including
o Daily attendance picked up a bit in May & June. However,
attendance historically drops off for July and August, until students
return to school. Average daily attendance for April, May & June is
32 teens per day.
o The Teen Center purchased and installed a variety of new,
budgeted furniture and equipment including 21 new couches for the
TV Lounge which replaced the 20 year old blue sofas donated from
the Fitness Center, 6 new tables for the computer lab which added
about 3 feet of additional space to move around the room, a new
Dome Hockey table for the game room which replaced the
underused foosball table. Mark also painted the restaurant
benches and tables to match the other new furniture
o Mark recently hired Jamie Kowalczyk to replace Ann Puleo on the
teen center staff. Jamie will be starting around Tues. July 18.
Ann’s last day is August 11. Mark is still looking for another new
staff member to replace Nick Pizzo. Nick’s last day will be August
18.
o The Teen Center’s lease renewal will be on the agenda for the Aug.
22 VON board meeting
o The Back to School Dance is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9 at the
Fitness Center from 6:30-9:00 pm
o The Lights On Afterschool event is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26
at Golf Mill Mall from approx. 4:00- 6:00 pm
o Mark is expecting the arrival of his second child, a baby girl, around
July 20.
