Village of Niles Human Services Committee Meeting Minutes November 13, 2018 The following Human Services Committee members were in attendance: Committee Chair George D. Alpogianis, Fitness Center Director Carl Maniscalco, Senior Center Director Kelly Mickle, Teen Center Director Mark Williams, Family Services Director Tony Hollenback and Deputy Village Clerk Kathryn Angell. Resident Member Tom Parala was absent. I. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:32 p.m. in Room 112 at the Niles Administration Building by Chairman Alpogianis. Meeting was moved from Council Chambers Conference Room because of Adjudication Hearings. II. Approval of Minutes Kelly Mickle made a motion to approve the minutes of October 16, 2018, seconded by Carl Maniscalco. On voice vote all approved. III. Old Business a. Beginning Discussions of Budget Needs for Fiscal Year 2020 Trustee Alpogianis requested that the department heads send him their budget requests for Fiscal year 2020 by November 30, 2018. IV. New Business a. Department Updates (reports attached) i. Fitness Center ii. Family Services iii. Senior Center iv. Teen Center V. Open Discussion/Public Comment Discussion was led by Chairman Alpogianis regarding the possibility of another Taste of Sister Cities to take place at 999 Civic Center Drive (Fitness, Family, and Senior Center) VI. Next Meeting – January 15, 2019 VII. Adjournment On voice vote, the meeting was adjourned at 10:27 a.m. Fitness Center Report-November13, 2018 • Memberships are at 2,344 as of November 1 and on their way up. • Promoting the 3 month special in the month of November. • Attended the Shure employee health fair on October 31. • Working with an energy efficiency company to investigate new LED lighting to replace metal halide fixtures and reduce energy costs. • Will be converting the pool liquid chlorine system to tablets to save money. • Staff attended the Club Industry show in Chicago on October 25. • The Group Express contest started on Nov. 12 and will run through Dec.17. • Performing exit phone interviews on all membership cancellations. • Volunteering at the Holly Jolly Event on Nov. 24. • Completed the 3rd of 6 workshops in the IPRA Leadership Academy. • Entering data into the new budget system. • Pickleball play has increased to a third day on Wednesdays at 1pm. • Attended the library Veteran’s Day program on Nov. 2 and handed out guest passes Senior Center Report Submitted by Kelly Mickle Membership – 884 Marty Cook putting together program for seniors Marty Cook from Maine Township Recovery Connection will provide an educational program on drugs, alcohol and the story of how opioid epidemic came to be. The program will also include a real like survivor story. The speaker will discuss his addiction to prescription drugs and alcohol, the impact it had on his family and his path to recovery Musical Memories – Finalizing Poster Medicare D open enrollment October 15 – December 7. Golden Agers and Embark Thanksgiving Day Luncheon Budget Teen Center Report Submitted by Mark Williams Membership/Attendance o Member visits- 395 for October (411 for Sept., 381 for Aug. & 332 for July) o Average daily attendance- 23 for October (27 for Sept., 20 for Aug. & 22 for July) o Current active members- 93 teens o # of new memberships- 7 for October (10 for Sept., 7 for August & 4 for July) o Guest visits- 45 for October (70 for Sept., 53 for Aug. & 48 for July) Facility and Equipment Updates/ Replacement - Replaced 3 Comcast DTA boxes- saving about $3 per month on Comcast bill - New problems with MaxGalaxy and VM’s- For about the last 4-6 weeks the check-in kiosk freezes after about 8 hours, causing staff to not be able to clock-in or clock-out. The kiosk needs to be restarted at least once per day, if not 2 times, taking about 3-4 minutes each time. Also, the calendar feature on the digital signage is no longer working properly and needs to have IT assistance to restart each day. An IT support ticket needs to be submitted for help. I believe both of these issues are related to the village network and not the MaxGalaxy software. IT is aware of the problem but I’m unsure of what action is being taken to resolve it. Community Partnerships/Support/ Volunteers - 11/7- advertising support for Niles Park District- Friday Fun Nights at Loverde Center on Nov. 30 through Dec. 21, admission is $10, but Teen Center members get in for $5 with their Teen Center ID Inquiry Responses Continuing programs - 10/12- 2 teens attended a Haunted House trip with Park Ridge Park District - 11/2- Open early for D63 early dismissal- had 45 visitors/record high of 75 teens through the door on one day - 11/2- 7 teens attended AMC movie theater for Venom - 11/6- 8 teens attended ice skating trip at Iceland- schools closed for election day In Progress - Winter newsletter and program calendars are being finalized - Working on scheduling a stress awareness workshop on Thurs. 11/29 and Thurs. 12/6 for teens, presented by Family Services - Continuing Programs/ activities for the Winter include … o Bring a Friend Fridays- On a selected Friday each month, if a current member brings a friend as a guest, both teens will receive a free soda and bag of chips. If the guest, purchases a membership, the current member and new member will receive a $5 gift certificate for a local store (like Subway or Gloria Jeans Coffee) or $10 to Kappy’s restaurant o Open at 11:45 for D63 early dismissal days- about one per month o Open at 1:00 pm for Maine East HS Finals in December- Cancelled due to staffing concerns o Cooking or craft project once per week by TC staff through December o NFS interns to provide an activity 1x per week beginning in January (rotating Tuesdays & Thursdays) through May o Monthly movie night (AMC theater or in-house) o Monthly speaker series to include Opioid Addiction and our community, Wright-Way animal rescue, anti-bullying by Miss Illinois Collegiate, Magic of Gary Kantor o Boys and Girls Check-In sessions on alternating weeks with NFS social workers o Monthly recreational trips coordinated with the Park Ridge Park District- Wrigley Ice Rink, Gameworks, indoor rock climbing, windy city ninjas o Valentine’s Dance scheduled for Saturday, February 9 from 6:30-9:00 pm 2018 Performance Goals - Refine implementation of MaxGalaxy, still continuing to have difficulties with some aspects of software, may need additional training with release of MaxGalaxy 2.0 in Late 2018. - Produce new promotional video - Continue performance management measures - Continue and improve 2nd year of the “Late Night Party”- reduce time, cost and risk exposure but still attract new members for a fun, special event - Participate in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training through the Crisis Prevention Institute to learn about de-escalating anxious, hostile or violent behavior and practicing the progression of non-harmful holding skills. Niles Family Services Updates Submitted by Tony Hollenback 1. Update of Departmental FY 2018 Goals a. Recommendation for new billing provider will be included in November Board agenda. New provider will provide cost savings for the Village. b. Strengthening Social Work Intern experiences through exposure in the Teen Center and with Senior Social Workers. Currently have 6 Social Work Interns. 2. Departmental Changes/Transitions a. Angelika Danek, LCSW is the new Senior Social Work Coordinator b. Working with HR to fill the vacant LCSW position c. Guest Relations-reviewing resumes and being interviewing for this position 3. Donor Relations/Holiday Outreach a. Niles Park District- will award NFS check for $2,000 from the Harvest Hustle b. Adopt a Family invitation was shared with all employees. Positive response! c. Upcoming holiday outreach events include: i. Niles Park District Recital- 12/2/2018 ii. Salon M Fundraiser- 12/3/2018 iii. Shop with a Cop- 12/9/2018 iv. Outreach to the Niles Chamber of Commerce d. Donor Dinner with local churches/Niles Lions Club-great success!
