Village of Niles Human Services Committee Meeting Minutes April 22, 2019 The following Human Services Committee members were in attendance: Committee Chair George D. Alpogianis, Resident Member Tom Parala, Fitness Center Director Carl Maniscalco, Family Services Director Tony Hollenback, Senior Center Director Kelly Mickle and Deputy Village Clerk Kathryn Angell. Teen Center Director Mark Williams was absent. I. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 10:42 a.m. in Room 212 at the Niles Administration Building by Chairman Alpogianis. II. Approval of Minutes Kelly Mickle made a motion to approve the minutes of March 19, 2019, seconded by Carl Maniscalco. On voice vote all approved. III. New Business a. Department Updates (reports attached, provided by Department Head) i. Fitness Center ii. Family Services iii. Senior Center iv. Teen Center IV. Open Discussion/Public Comment None V. Adjournment On voice vote, the meeting was adjourned at 11:15 a.m. Fitness Center Report-April 22, 2019 • Memberships are at 2533 as of April 1 and on their way up. • Attended Niles Chamber Morning Network event at the library April 16. • The pool liquid chlorine system was converted to save money. • Emergency replacement of RTU 3 at fitness. Scheduled for April 30.The fitness center will be closed that day. ComEd energy grant for $3900 • Cycling Classic July 25 at Notre Dame College Prep • Member Appreciation Day was held Saturday April 6 celebrating 20 years of fitness. 160 members enjoyed the food and entertainment. Meeting Note: The Police Department has expressed interest to be the food provider for the Cycling Classic as a fundraiser for one of the community outreach programs. Niles Family Services Updates- April 2019 1. Update of Departmental FY 2019 Goals a. Partnership with School District 63 i. Renewal of MOU with Village of Niles-On the Agenda for 4/23/19 Board Meeting b. Donor Relations i. $17,500 received for FY 2019 ii. Niles Cares- Planning meetings scheduled for community leaders to create a 501c3 c. Dental Days- confirmed for 10/25/19 and 10/26/19 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. i. Tony will create a promotional postcard (various languages) to distribute and promote ii. Confirm that part time employees can participate d. Stamp Out Hunger- Food drive on 5/11/19 sponsored by the US Post Office i. Volunteers from Athletico have agreed to assist with receiving/sorting/stocking food 2. Budget Updates a. FY2020 in alignment with department needs 3. Department Updates a. Direct Transition- Tony’s last day will be 5/9/2019 i. Darren Brown will be the Interim Director in Tony’s absence ii. HR has posted this position for recruitment 1. Steve/Hadley leading the process b. Recreational Cannabis Meeting- Thursday, May 2 (Ross Klicker) Human Services Committee April 22, 2019 Membership – 912 Musical Memories – First session was Thursday, April 4 Swing Into Spring at Golf Mill – Thursday, April 25 Rummage Sale – Saturday, April 27, 45 vendors LPi agreement has been signed. Ad sales will begin week of April 29. Proposed partnership with Center of Concern and Niles Maine Library District Block Party planning has begun, Helping Hands Community Resource Event letters will be finalized this week Teen Center Report- Thursday, April 18, 2019 Info since last report on 3/15/19 Membership/Attendance o Member visits- 366 for March o Average daily attendance- 21 for March o Current active members- 83 teens o # of new memberships- 2 for March o Guest visits- 38 for March Staffing/Training - Crissy- PT supervisor- is expecting her 1st child in mid-October 2019. - Mark attended training for verbal communication and de-escalation hosted by Family Services Community Partnerships/Support/ Volunteers - 3/21- conducted a lunch visit at Maine East high school in conjunction with the career office Continuing programs - Planning for Summer programs will begin next week and out to print by 1st week of May - 3/14- speaker series- 28 teens attended for the Magic of Gary Kantor - 3/27- 4 teens participated in trip to Escape Room Schaumburg with Park Ridge park district - 4/5- 4 teens attended movie at AMC theater- Captain Marvel In Progress - Continuing Programs/ activities for the Winter include … o Bring a Friend Fridays- free soda and chips & gift certificates with membership o Open at 11:45 for D63 early dismissal days- about one per month o Open at 1:00 pm for Maine East HS Finals in December & May o NFS interns to provide an activity 1x per week began in January (rotating Tuesdays & Thursdays) through March o Monthly movie night (AMC theater or in-house) o Monthly speaker series to include “Get a Job?” by Laura Cook from Maine 207 and Drum Circle program. o Monthly recreational trips coordinated with the Park Ridge Park District- K1 Speed Go- Kart racing and Laser Quest o 3rd Annual Late Night Party scheduled for Saturday, June 8 from 6:00-10:00 pm o Lunch/classroom visits to all local schools to be held between May 13 and May 24 2019 Performance Goals- preliminary - Continue replacement of dated or damaged equipment/furniture- focusing on large television in TV room and 2 tables in computer lab used for homework/crafts. - Create new online store for purchasing shirts and other promotional items with the Teen Center logo - Implement new release of MaxGalaxy 2.0- not expected until mid-2020 - Attempt to increase membership/daily attendance by marketing to students at Maine East High School - Attempt to increase membership/daily attendance by including new 6th graders at Gemini Jr. High - Increase use of Snapchat and Instagram to better connect with teens - Continue performance management measures - Continue collaboration with NFS for social work interns at the teen center
