Meeting Minutes
May 21, 2019
The following Human Services Committee members were in attendance: Committee Chair
George D. Alpogianis, Fitness Center Director Carl Maniscalco, Interim Family Services
Director Darren Brown, Senior Center Director Kelly Mickle, Teen Center Director Mark
Williams and Deputy Village Clerk Kathryn Angell. Resident Member Tom Parala was absent.
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 9:37 a.m. in Room 212 at the Niles Administration
Building by Chairman Alpogianis.
II. Approval of Minutes
Carl Maniscalco made a motion to approve the minutes of March 19, 2019, seconded
by Kelly Mickle. On voice vote all approved.

On voice vote, the meeting was adjourned at 10:07 a.m.
Fitness Center Report
• Memberships are at 2523 as of May 1 a loss of 10 members.
• Attended Niles Chamber Morning Network event at the library May 21.
• RTU 3 at fitness was replaced on April 30. ComEd energy grant for $3900.
• Pool dry cooler replacement will be on the June board agenda and is budgeted. The cost
will be $74,000.
• Cycling Classic July 25 at Notre Dame College Prep.
• Attended Department Head retreat training day on May 10.
• Staff attended the Niles West high school family night to promote fitness.
• Performance measures have been entered for fiscal year 2019.
• On May 14, 2019, one of the fitness center members experienced a medical emergency
on the track. Lifeguard Anthony Varzino and two fitness center members responded
quickly following the emergency action procedures performing CPR and using the AED
as well as contacting EMS. Through their quick actions the member survived
Niles Family Services Updates
• USPS Stamp Out hunger Food Drive was a big success. 12,698 lbs. of food was
donated to the Food Pantry
• Many good applicants received for the Part Time Senior Social Worker Position.
4 top candidates will be interviewed this week. Hope to have an offer out by the
end of the month.
• South Asian event being planned for end of summer. Hope to advertise at new
South Asian businesses in Niles at the school year registration in the fall.
• 4 interns confirmed for the upcoming school year. 1 intern for the summer.
• Tony’s last day was Friday 5/17. Darren has assumed duties for the interim.
• Most cases on the waiting list have been assigned, and the department has
resumed regular schedules for the summer months.
Senior Center Updates
Membership – 925
Musical Memories – Silverado will begin bringing residents in their van this week
Rummage Sale – $480 for Family Services
LPI ad sales have begun, will appear in September/October program guide
Heartland Blood Drive – Wednesday, June 5th

Teen Center Report
Membership/Attendance
o Member visits- 308 for April
o Average daily attendance- 19 for April
o Current active members- 83 teens
o # of new memberships- 3 for April
o Guest visits- 33 for March
Community Partnerships/Support/ Volunteers
- 5/7- made contact with Katie Schneider for a “Blues Mobile” for the 4th of July Parade, Teen
Center’s theme will be the “Blues Brothers”- float to provide music from movie, kids to wear
black hats/sunglasses/ white shirts
- 5/10- 12 hours of volunteer service by junior from Maine East HS for National Honor Society
requirements
- 5/16- met with Angie Schaub, new Director of Family Services for EMSD 63- looking for areas
to partner
- 5/17- received 100 reading lights & about 50 t-shirts from movie marketing company to use as
prizes for teens
- 5/21- completed classroom/lunch visits to all Niles area schools- saw approximately 4000
students
- 5/17- seeing a small increase in new members as a result of school visits, hoping to see more
new ones join over the coming 2-3 weeks
Continuing programs
- Summer programs are complete and in process of being distributed around the community
- 4/18- speaker Laura Cook- how to get a job- no show
- 5/4- 5 teens attended in-house movie night- Instant Family
In Progress
- Continuing Programs/ activities for the Spring/Summer include …
o Bring a Friend Fridays- free soda and chips & gift certificates with membership
o Open at 11:45 for D63 early dismissal days- about one per month
o Open at 1:00 pm for Maine East HS Finals in December & May
o Monthly movie night (AMC theater or in-house)
o Monthly recreational trips- mini-golf/batting cages trip, oasis water park, magic waters in
Rockford, swimming/bball at Niles Fitness Center
o 3rd Annual Late Night Party scheduled for Saturday, June 8 from 6:00-10:00 pm
o Lunch/classroom visits to all local schools to be held between May 13 and May 24
o Planning and prep for 4th of July Parade
2019 Performance Goals- preliminary
- Continue replacement of dated or damaged equipment/furniture- FY20 focus 2 tables in
computer lab used for homework/crafts.
- Create new online store for purchasing shirts and other promotional items with the Teen Center
logo
- Implement new release of MaxGalaxy 2.0- not expected until mid-2020
- Attempt to increase membership/daily attendance by marketing to students at Maine East High
School
- Attempt to increase membership/daily attendance by including new 6th graders at Gemini Jr.
High
- Increase use of Snapchat and Instagram to better connect with teens
- Continue performance management measures
- Continue collaboration with NFS for social work interns at the teen center
