Village of Niles Human Services Committee Meeting Minutes June 18, 2019 The following Human Services Committee members were in attendance: Resident Member Tom Parala, Fitness Center Director Carl Maniscalco, Interim Family Services Director Darren Brown, Senior Center Director Kelly Mickle, Teen Center Director Mark Williams and Deputy Village Clerk Kathryn Angell. Committee Chair George D. Alpogianis was absent. I. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:46 a.m. in Room 212 at the Niles Administration Building by Deputy Village Clerk Kathryn Angell. II. Approval of Minutes Kelly Mickle made a motion to approve the minutes of May 21, 2019, seconded by Carl Maniscalco. On voice vote all approved. III. New Business a. Department Updates (reports attached, provided by Department Head) i. Fitness Center ii. Family Services iii. Senior Center iv. Teen Center IV. Open Discussion/Public Comment None V. Adjournment On voice vote, the meeting was adjourned at 10:01 a.m. Fitness Center Report • Memberships are at 2480 as of June 1 a loss of 30 members due to the 3 month memberships • Attended Niles Chamber Morning Network event at the library June 18.5 • Waiting for a $3900 grant from Com Ed for the RTU 6 replacement • Pool dry cooler replacement will be on the June board agenda and is budgeted. The cost will be $74,000. • Cycling Classic July 25 at Notre Dame College Prep • Attended Diversity training on May 11 • Active shooter training is scheduled for June 25 Niles Family Services Updates • Total Monetary Value of the USPS Food Drive came to $10,737.32 • New Senior Social Worker was hired internally-Briar Gartner, former crisis worker, started on 6/17/19 • New partnership beginning with the Niles Community Church to offer groups on their site • Attended the Kid’s Health and Safety Expo that was sponsored by Representative Michael McAuliffe’s Office on 6/15/19 • Met with Luthran General Hospital to further discussions on joint NFD/NFS overdose initiative; another meeting scheduled for end of the month • Participated in the Special Board Presentation for Cannabis Legalization on 6/1/19 • Assisting with translating the Citizen’s Survey that is being conducted by the Village. Letters went out with 3 additional languages, and NFS will be a resource for translation assistance Senior Center Updates • Membership – 939 • New liability forms • Kayaking – 12 • Hot Air Balloons – 2nd trip needed • 4th of July parade Teen Center Report Membership/Attendance o Member visits- 460 for May o Average daily attendance- 24 for May o Current active members- 101 teens o # of new memberships- 26 for May o Guest visits- 50 for May Staffing/Training - Mark attending a Diversity Training presentation through Perspectives EAP along with all other FT employees - Mark conducted interviews for a new PT supervisor. The position has been offered to JC Garcia. We hope to have JC start working at the Teen Center by Friday 6/21. JC has a BA in Social Work, was an intern with Niles Family Services and worked as a receptionist for Niles Family Services for the past 5 years. He will be an outstanding addition to the staff at the Teen Center. Community Partnerships/Support/ Volunteers - 5/31- received approx. 250 t-shirts and variety quantities of knit hats, posters, buttons for the movie Shazam from a movie marketing company & 100 reading lights, they will be distributed during the 4th of July parade - 6/12- attended the 2nd meeting of the Niles Volunteer Council- working to coordinate persons willing to volunteer with those organizations/persons needing assistance Continuing Programs - 5/23- 35 teens participated in a drumming circle experience provided by John Yost of Rhythm Revolution. The teens learned to create their own rhythms, coordinate and complement others and work as a team. - 5/31- Movie Night OUT- 13 teens attended to see Aladdin at AMC theater, this is a significant increase over the past 6-9 months of these events In Progress - Continuing Programs/ activities for the Spring/Summer include … o Bring a Friend Fridays- 1x per month- free soda and chips & gift certificates with membership o Open at 11:45 for D63 early dismissal days- about one per month o Open at 1:00 pm for Maine East HS Finals in December & May o Monthly movie night (AMC theater or in-house) o Monthly recreational trips for summer- mini-golf/batting cages trip, oasis water park, magic waters in Rockford, swimming/bball at Niles Fitness Center o Planning and prep for 4th of July Parade 2019 Performance Goals- preliminary - Continue replacement of dated or damaged equipment/furniture- FY20 focus 2 tables in computer lab used for homework/crafts. - Create new online store for purchasing shirts and other promotional items with the Teen Center logo - Implement new release of MaxGalaxy 2.0- not expected until mid-2020 - Attempt to increase membership/daily attendance by marketing to students at Maine East High School - Attempt to increase membership/daily attendance by including new 6th graders at Gemini Jr. High - Increase use of Snapchat and Instagram to better connect with teens - Continue performance management measures - Continue collaboration with NFS for social work interns at the teen center
