I. Call to Order
Chair Lindsay Brubaker called the meeting of the Public Arts & Culture Advisory Council to
order at 5:04 p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Niles Historical and Cultural Center, 8970
N. Milwaukee Avenue.
II. Approval of Meeting Summary
Debi Gajewski made a motion, seconded by Steve Vinezeano, to approve the meeting
summary of April 11, 2016. On voice vote, all concurred.

III. Organization Representative Report
Niles Public Library - Susan Lempke reported on the upcoming album cover art exhibit.
Artwork is due May 13 and 14 and will be exhibited in June. This program is open to adults.
Artist Mary Dowd Demas is trying to build awareness of arts and culture in Niles at her shop.
VFW - Jim Kozak reported that there is discussion to merge the Niles VFW with the Park
Ridge VFW. The 70th anniversary party of the VFW will take place on June 26.
School District 63 - Janet Spector Bishop reported that there may be an opportunity for greater
participation in the arts when the new principal of Gemini comes on board on June 1. District
63 is partnering with the library on the Summer Reading Program.
Niles Park District - Lindsay Brubaker reported that all summer activities are up and running.
Village Manager Steve Vinezeano reported that the Arts and Culture budget is expected to be
approved at the May 24 Board of Trustees meeting. The RFP for the Master Plan will go out
in May with a due date of June 15. The proposals will be reviewed by the Council in July.
Public Services is working on the snow plow project (Mobile Murals Program). The Village
will move forward with enhanced web activity when the new Communications Coordinator is
hired.
Niles Chamber of Commerce - Katie Schneider reported that the Chamber and the Niles Park
District are sponsoring a rubber duck race this summer for the scholarship program.
Niles Historical Museum and Cultural Center - Mike Crisci reported on upcoming events at
the Historical Center and opportunities to partner with the library. The Center is host to the
monthly meetings of the Illinois Mycological Association (mushrooms).
Artist Debi Gajewski reported on her artistic endeavors. Plans for a Cemetery Walk have been
cancelled, but she is hoping to host a Twilight Historical Living Tour that will incorporate
Niles history and its residents. This event may be held at the Historical Museum. She also
presented the idea of a photo project with moms and their children.
Artist Carol Luc reported on Faces Not Forgotten – painted portraits of children lost to gun
violence. Each image is digitized and printed on a quilt that will travel the country.
Secretary Cathy Spadoni reported that Artist Jonathan Mazur has resigned from the Council
because the meeting times conflict with his work schedule.
IV. Old Business
Review of Draft of Arts Project Proposal Guidelines
While members were asked to come up with a catchy title for the document, it was decided
that “Niles Arts and Culture Project” is simple and straightforward and will not be
confused with the theme “It’s Possible Here: Reflections on the American Dream.”

Council members reviewed the document as amended per the last meeting and suggested
adding the theme and the total budgeted amount, and determined the submission deadline
of August 1, 2016. The final document will be announced to the public via press releases
in late May.
V. New Business
Discussion of the Logo
The Council discussed what they would like to see in the new Arts & Culture Council
logo. Ericka Stoor-Burning submitted two sketches for consideration. The following
suggestions and the sketches will be presented to LS+Team, the firm who will create the
logo.
The colors should be consistent with the Village’s current logo.

VI. Open Discussion
Bike Niles will be held on June 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Notre Dame College Prep.

VIII. Next Meeting
The June 13 meeting is cancelled. The next meeting will be held on Monday, July 11, 2016 at
5:00 p.m. at the Niles Historical & Cultural Center.
IX. Adjournment
There being no further business to come before the Council, Janet Spector Bishop made a
motion, seconded by Debi Gajewski, to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 6:00
p.m.
