PUBLIC ARTS & CULTURE ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES Monday, February 11, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. Members Present: Chair Lindsay Brubaker – Niles Park District Carol Luc - Artist John Kosirog – School District 71 Steven Vinezeano – VFW Post 3579 Alicia Bermes – Niles Chamber of Commerce Marina Samovsky - Photographer Janet Spector Bishop – School District 63 Kathleen Gallegos – Artist / The Artist Studio Susan Lempke – Niles Public Library Barb Karawacki – Niles Historical Society Andrew Przybylo – Mayor Members Absent: Kim Wasilewski - Artist Edward Eubank – School District 207 Debi Gajewski – Artist Village Officials/Staff Present: Village Officials/Staff Absent: Katie Schneider – Community Engagement Coord. Trustee George Alpogianis I. Call to Order Chair Lindsay Brubaker began the meeting at 5:03 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019 in the Niles Administration Building, Council Chambers Conference Room. II. Approval of Meeting Summary Minutes were reviewed. Steve Vinezeano made a motion to accept the January 14, 2019 minutes. Kathleen Gallegos second the motion, all were in favor; none opposed. The January Minutes were approved. Lindsey skipped to New Business to accommodate the guests of the Garden Club that were presenting. III. Organization Representative Reports Susan Lempke (Niles-Maine District Library) announced that the Polish art exhibit for the gallery space on the second floor was installed and it looks fantastic. Coming Together programming is also underway. The Art Bench pictures will probably go up in the fitness center and eventually will come back to Village Hall for a permanent location. Andrew Przybylo (Niles Mayor) thanked the Council for their work and commitment to the arts; he then announced the Asian Lunar New Year celebration on Sunday, February 17 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Oakton Community Center in Skokie. Marina Samovsky (Photographer) talked about the Day in the Life of Niles project which was then covered later in the meeting. John Kosirog (Clarence E. Culver School) did not have an update. Barbara Karawacki (Niles Historical Society) reported that the Niles Historical Society is in the process of inventorying rooms and cleaning out space. They will be donating some clothes to the local high school theatre department. Public Arts & Culture Advisory Council, Minutes for February 11, 2019 Kathleen Gallegos (Art Station Studio) is now working with MNASR and continues her paint parties and glow-in-the-dark art. Alicia Bermes (Niles Chamber of Commerce) the Chamber held their annual Mayoral luncheon last month and is hosting a Pub Crawl in March. Carol Luc (Artist) had a piece of art sent into the Vernal Equinox art show in Will County. Lindsey Brubaker (Niles Park District) held their Little Ladies dance and has the Little Gentleman’s Dance coming up. They are preparing for their dodgeball and basketball programs. Katie Schneider (Village of Niles) noted that the Village of Niles Arts and Culture Council is a sponsor for “The Legend of Vavel’s Dragon.” She asked others to help promote the event. It is free for families. The Village is also sponsoring a Lunch with Author William Kowalski at Lone Tree Manor as part of Coming Together. Ed Eubank (School District 207) was unable to attend the meeting. Katie Schneider distributed a flyer on his behalf for their Newsies performances. He also invite Council members to be a judge for the 24th Annual Maine East Art Exhibition, details were distributed. Janet Spector Bishop (School District 63) is very busy with construction and their transition into preschool program. She will have more next month when their theatre programs rev up. Steve Vinezeano (Niles VFW) nothing new for the VFW. IV. Niles Artisan Guild Marina Samovsky did headshot for each of the members; the group is working on a website which will include member’s pictures, bios and information on their art. V. Old Business a. A Day in the Life of Project Katie and Marina distributed a project overview. Marina asked each Council member to think of 5 people that would be potential subjects for this project. They can email either Katie or Marina. Council members agreed to be a point person for their group or organization and help secure a commitment from participants. VI. New Business a. Farm on Franks & the Garden Club Katy Darr and Roberta Tellefsen spoke briefly about the Niles Garden Club and distributed a schedule of events for 2019 that include planting containers at the library, an annual plant swap, and outdoor walking schedule. New members are always welcome. They also distributed the application for Farm on Franks garden plots for the 2019 season. They asked Council members to hang up flyers in their businesses or organizations if possible. VII. Open Discussion There was no open discussion. VIII. Public Comment There was no public comment. IX. Next Meeting Next Meeting is on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. X. Adjournment Janet Spector Bishop made a motion to adjourn, Steve Vinezeano second. All were in favor, none opposed.
