Village of Niles PUBLIC ARTS & CULTURE ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. Village Hall, 1000 Civic Center Drive, Niles 2nd Floor Conference Room/EOC Members Present: Marina Samovsky – Photographer, Julie Jentel - Niles Park District, Tracy Holmes - Niles Chamber of Commerce, Carol Luc – Artist, Victoria Luz- Niles-Maine District Library, Ramon Prieto – VFW Post 3579 Members Absent:, Kathleen Gallegos – Artist, Angie Schab – School District 63, Barbara Karawacki – Niles Historical Society, Carly Derec – Artist Village Officials/Staff Present: Katie Schneider – Community Engagement & Marketing Supervisor, Craig Niedermaier – Trustee I. Call to Order - Chair Marina Samovsky called the meeting to order in person on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at Village Hall, 2nd Floor/EOC, 1000 Civic Center Drive at 4:35 p.m. II. Public Comment - No public comment was made. III. Approval of Meeting Minutes Tracy Holmes made a motion to accept the Minutes from the January 10, 2024 meeting as presented, Julie Jentel second the motion, all were in favor, none opposed, minutes approved. IV. Old Business a. N Vision Art Gallery – I. Katie updated the application and presented it the Council. Members of the Council discussed and gave input, Katie will finalize and add the logo once it is determined. Three people sub mitted logo designs and the Council discussed and requested changes to some and eliminated others. Marina asked that any logo submissions be sent to Katie ahead of the next meeting. The Council will give one last review and vote then. II. A “Meet the Artist” is scheduled with Ruth Pycke at the N Vision Art Gallery on Saturday, March 9 from 9:30 – 11:30 am. Marina asked for help promoting and invited everyone to attend. III. As part of the Arts and Culture Master Plan, the Council discussed ways to build an art inventory for the Village to make available for the public. The Council agreed to purchase a piece from each exhibiting artist in the gallery and put it on display at Village Hall on the 2nd Floor. Tracy Holmes made a motion to purchase the “Lakeshore Skyline” painting for $350 by artist Ruth Pycke. Ramon Prieto second the motion, all were in favor, none opposed. Motion passed. Marina and Katie will ask Ruth for a proposal to commission four designs for coasters to be made. IV. Marina suggested that we host a spring show in the art gallery to showcase local artists and invite a handful of artists to participate. We can tie it together with a gallery opening to introduce the new name and logo. This will be discussed at the next meeting. b. Golf Mill Park - The contract to commission sculptor Gwen Yen Chui to fabricate and deliver the High Flight sculpture at Golf Mill Park was on the February agenda requesting Board approval. V. New Business a. Village Hall Plaza Remodel – Katie reported to the group that the Village Hall Plaza remodel will be the next location to strategize for art. VII. Next Meeting The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 4:30 pm. VIII. Adjournment – Ramon Prieto made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:25 p.m. Victoria Luz seconded the motion, all were in favor, none opposed. Meeting adjourned.
