APPROVED MINUTES
OF THE NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION
VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK
May 3, 2012
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 7:03 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall in
the Terrace Room.
Commissioners present: Jerry Block, Maureen Fallows, Elsa Fischer, Marilyn Jamora, Christopher
Laughlin, Sherry Natenberger, Eric Robbins, Cathi Winnie and Liaison Kendal Maltas.
Commissioners Excused: Bonnie Siegel and Linda Goldman.
Commissioners Absent: Terry Luc
Guests in attendance: Brian Bruce, Tammy Friedman, Sherry Weiss, Sharon Moyer and Michael
Greenberg (Artist of the month for May).
MINUTES:
Chairman Julia Miller asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the April 5, 2012 meeting.
Commissioner Laughlin called for the motion and Commissioner Robbins seconded. All are in favor.
Amendments to the minutes are as follows: Under YMCA – Music Event – delete sentence two
regarding neighbors, as this was not discussed. Under Old Business correct the spelling of Steve
Gianni’s name. Motion to approve amendments: Commissioner Laughlin and seconded by
Commissioner Fallows, all in favor.
HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE:
Guest Tammy Friedman introduced herself to the commission as a resident of Northbrook. She is in
pharmaceutical sales and serves on several different boards such as the Huntington Disease Society of
America. Ms. Friedman stated that she is very creative and participated in the “Butterflies on Parade”
event in Highland Park.
Elsa Fischer from the Northbrook Park District introduced herself as the liaison for the Park District to the
commission and said she would be working with us on Art in the Park until Cathi Klaver’s replacement
starts on June 11, 2012.
ART IN THE PARK:
We have 67 artists paid to date and will be accepting artists until the day of the event. The contracts for
the music groups are out and we are waiting for the signed contracts to return. The sub-committee
walked the Village Green and saw the new design of the park and how beautiful it is. Slight adjustments
need to be made to the layout of the tents and to ensure that the music is not too loud for the artists in the
tents closest to the musical groups.
Food Vendors to date are Hey Brothers Ice Cream, Sunset Foods and Little Louie’s.
Volunteers – This year, a different approach will be taken to volunteers. Chairman Miller will be
designating the volunteers and matching them up with a leader. Clair DeNanno will be the silent auction
leader and Cathi Winnie of the YMCA has volunteered to take ownership of the children’s project. Junior
Artists will be self-directed but we have plenty of areas where volunteers are needed. Commissioner
Fallows will work as Chairman Miller’s assistant during the event. Several Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and
Community Service people will also be volunteering.
Advertising – The image chosen out of a group of artists from this year came from artist Danilo Cuevas.
Advertising this year includes two-sided posters, post cards, Trib handout and the DuPage “Explore”
catalog.
Junior Artists will only be on Saturday. There will not be a large tent, colorful, rented umbrellas will be
used.
Commissioners discussed next month’s meeting on June 7. Commissioner Brian Bruce announced that
he will no longer be an Arts Commissioner, but he will still volunteer when he is able. Brian Bruce has
been on the commission since its start, which was 10 years ago.
WORKSHOPS:
The first two workshops were a hit. We are in the black with 18 people in the first workshop and 7 or 8
people in the second. This year’s workshops have been very successful.
YMCA – MUSIC COMMITTEE:
The sub-committee met today to discuss talent for the events, the first three Tuesdays after Northbrook
Days which will be August 7, 14 and 21, 2012. We have worked out a contract for Out of Control Band
and others are being contacted as well.
The food vendor will be Little Louie’s. They want two choices of food to keep it easy and simple. The
commission will check into signing up other food vendors if needed as well. Food vendors must fill out a
temporary food vendor permit with the Village Sanitarian.
Techny Road will be under construction so we must keep that in mind, especially when promoting the
event.
NEW BUSINESS:
The Youth Commission and Chairman Miller discussed the idea that the Arts Commission would help to
fund the prizes for the Film Festival. The commission needs to vote on this idea.
MOTION: Commissioner Jamora made a motion to fund the prizes in the amount of $100.00 for the
Youth Commissions Film Festival on June 11, 2012. Commissioner Laughlin seconded the motion and
all are in favor. Motion Passed.
Commissioner Winnie discussed the kids’ project for Art in the Park. She shared the idea of making
Butterfly Kites for the little ones and paper bag kites for the older kids. They can decorate them and fly
them.
This year the commission discussed making sure we have more signage so the kids can find the project
area.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
The Walgreen’s space was discussed regarding displaying art in the windows. Liaison Maltas reported
that she will work with Economic Development coordinator, Mr. David Schoon, to obtain more
information on this opportunity. Liaison Maltas will get the logistics and forward them onto the
commissioners.
ADJOURN
Commissioner Laughlin made a motion to adjourn and Commissioner Fallows seconded. On voice vote,
the motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 8:03 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
