HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE:
North Suburban YMCA Staff Johnson and Schultz recapped the Gig at the Y Event that was held August 7,
14 and 21st. Overall they felt it was a terrific event and would like to repeat it next year at their facilities
grounds. They have the capability to market it all year round. There are features that can be improved upon,
such as marketing the event throughout the year therefore improving attendance, promoting the event in their
class brochures, partnering with other agencies within and outside of Northbrook, specifically inviting
residents of Covenant Village and continued work with the Northbrook Arts Commission. They will
compile some of the highlights and challenges of the event and present a report to the Art Commission.
Additionally, the YMCA is making themselves available for any programs/events the community may
want to hold at their facility. They are holding an open house on October 13th for a tour of the renovated
building. They have installed a gallery type wiring system for hanging art work. This is to present work
done by participants in their art classes but could be available for outside artists’ work.
Chairman Miller addressed the guests and explained the requirements of being a Commissioner and the
general functions of the Commission.
ART IN THE PARK; 2012 SUB-COMMITTEE REPORT:
The Committee met August 23rd and went over the Art in the Park Event. 77 artists participated, the
Commission broke even on the event, there were approximately 2000 attendees and. The approach of the
sub-committee is to analyze in detail what did and did not work at the event. The subcommittee is not
asking for the commissions input just the okay to go ahead and plan ahead for 2013 with some changes to
the event. The subcommittee will meet again and present their findings at a future date. Liaison Maltas
stated the contract is currently being reviewed by staff and should be ready by October. The Commission
approved the future planning of the event.
GIG AT THE Y:
A general discussion occurred concerning the August7, 14 and 21st event. The Commission’ felt overall the
event was successful but comments include 1) they felt the overall marketing of the event was weak and
could be improved; 2) selection of dates of the event should be considered with regards to conflicts with
vacations, back to school and other community events; 3) the monetary outlay of the event; 4) choice of
bands and 5) location of the event. The Commission is open to changes to improve the event and will
continue discussion at the next meeting.
