MINUTES OF THE NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK MAY 2, 2013 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 7:03 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall in the Terrace Room. Commissioners present:, Maureen Fallows, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer, Cherie Natenberg, Marilyn Jamora, Pamela Tokowitz, Sherry Weiss, Cathie Winnie and Cheryl Fayne-dePersio, Liaison. Commissioners Excused: Jerry Block , Elsa Fischer and Eric Robbins Commissioners Absent: Chad Davidson Guests in attendance:. Anna Ivleva, Artist MINUTES: Chairman Julia Miller asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the April 4, 2013 meeting. Commissioner Laughlin called for the motion and Commissioner Moyer seconded. All are in favor with corrections as noted. HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE: Anna Ivleva is an Artist and a resident of Northbrook. She currently has paintings hanging at the Library. She is interested to see a Northbrook Artist get together to meet other Northbrook Artists. ART IN THE PARK update A brief report was given from the April 25th sub-committee meeting . The committee reported 71 Artists have applied to date and the promotional artwork has been chosen and the commission is awaiting the electronic file. The following areas that have commissioners to take the lead and staff them are: Information Booth co-chaired by Sherry Weiss and Sharon Moyer Silent Auction co-chaired by Jerry Block and Marilyn Jamora Program design and printing co-chaired by Julia Miller and Marilyn Jamora Young Artists chaired by Julia Miller The Idea committee will be discussing the Children’s Activity/Community Project and will present ideas to the commission. The YMCA will not be staffing the event this year but will help out with whatever project the commission chooses. The Program will include a map and listing of all the Artists and the layout of the Village Green. There will also be a larger map for the Information Booth with a listing of Artists. There are still open areas that general volunteers will be needed. The commission will be reaching out to the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Honor Society for some volunteers to help out in general areas for the event. Chairman Miller has sent out confirmations to all the musical acts for the event. Liaison Fayne-DePersio has the draft contracts and will review them before sending them out. Commissioner Laughlin also reported that there will be Sunday morning Yoga class from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and he is working on having at least one hour for the Northbrook Kids prodigies to perform sometime that weekend. The commission discussed the differences between a Community Project and a Kids Activity for the event. The Idea committee will discuss this at their next meeting and present idea’s to the commission on which project would best suite this event and the community. Chairman Miller will be joining the sub- committee to assist in discussions. Commissioner Natenberg has volunteered to join this committee. The next sub-committee meeting will be held at the Village Hall on May 6th at 10:00 a.m. The goal to finalize the idea will be May 15th. COMMITTEE UPDATES: ART WORKSHOPS: Commissioner Jamora reported the April workshop with Diane Johnson was successful with her Water color workshop. There were 17 participants which gave a profit to the Friends of the Arts in the amount of $1,400.00 for future Art events. The Artist brought 10 participants on her own to this workshop. The next workshop will be May 4th and 5th with Sally Baker Keller, Pastel Portraits. There are 7 people signed up to date for this workshop so the commission should break even on this workshop. There will possibly be a workshop sometime this fall with Joye Moon, a Collage workshop. Commissioner Jamora is in negotiations with the Artist and will report back to the commission when schedules are finalized. ROCK THE GREEN: Commissioner Laughlin updated the commission on the Youth Rock band competition. Tomorrow is the deadline for applications and to date we have 8 bands that have applied and more may come by tomorrow. The semi-finals are scheduled for May 14th which all bands must perform. These performances will be videotaped and put on the Northbrook Park District’s website so people participate in the contest and click like to the video they prefer. Finals are scheduled for June 7, 2013. MOTION: Commissioner Jamora motioned to fund Rock the Green grant for $1,500.00. Commissioner Natenberg seconded the motion. All are in favor with Commissioner Laughlin abstaining. Motion Passed. MOTION: Commissioner Laughlin motioned to approve the $200.00 Grant for the Youth Commission for their Annual Film Festival scheduled for June 10, 2013 at the Northbrook Public Library. Commissioner Jamora seconded the motion and all are in favor. Motion Passed. MOTION: Commissioner Moyer motioned to approve the grant submitted from the NSYMCA for the amount of $270.00 for their Jr. High Juried Art Show to be held in November of 2013. Commissioner Weiss seconded the motion and all are in favor with Cathie Winnie abstaining. Motion Passed. MOTION: Commissioner Weiss motioned to approve the grant from Historical Society in the amount of $450.00 for Shermerfest on September 15, 2013. Commissioner Laughlin seconded the motion and all are in favor. Motion Passed. OLD BUSINESS: Commissioner Laughlin would like to do a one day concert on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend in the Village Green. This would be a BBQ and have all the rocks bands perform for one day. The commission is also discussing alternative sites if the Village Green in not available. This is one idea that has come out of the Idea Committee. Further discussion will take place when the commission knows the Village Green is available. MOTION: Commissioner Fallows motioned to approve funds to reflect the changes that were made to the original proposal up to $300.00 more. Commissioner Jamora seconded the motion and all are in favor. Motion Passed. NEW BUSINESS: Commissioner Jamora reported that our guest Northbrook Artist Anna Ivleva will donate a 24 X 26 Oil Painting for the Silent Auction. Commissioner Jamora will contact her to pick up the piece for the auction. Chairman Miller discussed a draft brochure that Bonnie Siegel (retired commissioner) made and presented to the board for review and ideas for use. The commission thanks Bonnie Siegel for her submission and thought she did a very nice job. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioner Linda Goldman has submitted her resignation to the commission (see attached). The commissioner has accepted her resignation and Thanks her for her years of service. The Community Relations Commission is hosting the Taste of Asia on Sunday, May 5th, 2013 from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the YMCA. They have 14 to 20 acts of music and dance from Korea, Thailand, etc. They have Art displays from three Asian Artists displaying paintings. They will have Asian food vendors there as well. ADJOURN Commissioner Laughlin made a motion to adjourn and Commissioner Fallows seconded.
