MINUTES OF THE NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK JANUARY 9, 2014 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 7:02 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall in the Terrace Room. Commissioners present: Commissioners Jerry Block, Elsa Fischer, Marilyn Jamora, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer, Steve Gianni, Chairman Julia Miller and Emma Trausch - Liaison. Commissioners Absent: Maureen Fallows, Cherie Natenberg, Cathie Winnie and Sherry Weiss. Guests in attendance: Erin Malloy, EM Events. MINUTES: Chairman Julia Miller asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the November 7, 2013 meeting. Minutes were approved with corrections. All are in favor. HEAR FROM THE AUDIENCE None. 2014 ART IN PARK REVIEW Erin Malloy of EM Events reported that everything is going good on the planning stages. Art jurying will occur in February. The art is going to be pre-juried to get them in our event because there is a new art show called "Southport Buffalo Grove" in Chicago and it will be held the same weekend as Northbrook's. Advertising will be big this year. The Chicago Tribune will be doing a special section again this year. Expenses will be paid by advertising dollars. The artwork for the advertising will be picked the middle to the end of February. We want to have quality over quantity for the show. Erin will discuss with the Park District new ideas she has for this year. Possibilities for this year are Yoga, Tai Chi and Poetry readings. Local artists have shown interest such as Dennis Downes and Ken Call. It was discussed to upgrade the young artist section. The budget was discussed with forecasting of funds for events already approved and those that are yearly and pending. This review was to discuss funds available for requests for funds received and possible events throughout the year. ROCK THE GREEN Commissioner Laughlin has requested $2,000.00 to allow a raise in the prizes and give a st pend to the judges this year. MOTION: Commissioner Jamora motioned to award $2,000.00 for Rock the Green and Commissioner Block seconded the motion. Commissioner Fischer abstained. All are in favor and motion passed. WORKSHOPS AND NORTHBROOK ORIGINALS Commissioner Jamora reports there is a lot of interest already for the workshops this year. Nine people have already signed up. In April the tile room at the Village Green will not be available due to Earth Day. The commission will work with the Park District to find an alternate site. NORTHBROOK ORIGINALS This will be held in April instead of January. 168 artists will receive the application and information regarding the event. The commission will follow up with email blasts as well. Chairman Miller will put together the slides. The judge has been hired already. We will have a 50 piece maximum for the event this year. The reception will be held after the short April meeting at the Northbrook Library. With Eric Robbins gone the commission will be doing a lot of the work for the Library for the show. REDESIGN OF ARTS COMMISSION WEB-SITE Chairman Miller discussed the website and how out of date it is. Someone looking at the website interested in the workshop contacted Chairman Miller regarding updating the website. She agreed to update the website for the commission for her workshop fee. She will also give the commission a proposal to help redesign the website. NEW BUSINESS Chairman Miller called a motion to approve the six recommendations from the November 7th meeting for the preliminary budget for the Art in the Park 2014 event. MOTION: Commissioner Jamora motioned to approve the six recommendations from the November 7th meeting for the preliminary budget for the Art in the Park 2014 event and Commissioner Gianni seconded. All are in favor, motion passed. OLD BUSINESS None. ANNOUNCEMENTS Commissioner Block reported Alan Cohns photography is being displayed at the YMCA now. GBN's Variety Show will be the week in February. ADJOURN Commissioner Fischer made a motion to adjourn and Commissioner Block seconded.
