MINUTES
OF THE NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION
VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK
FEBRUARY 5, 2014
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 7:03 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall in
the Terrace Room.
Commissioners present: Chair Miller, Commissioners Jerry Block, Elsa Fischer, Maureen Fallows, Steve
Gianni, Cathie Winnie and Liaison Emma Trausch.
Commissioners Excused: Marilyn Jamora, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer, Cherie Natenberg and
Sherry Weiss.
Commissioners Absent:
Guests in attendance: Larry Stern.
MINUTES:
Chairman Julia Miller asked for a motion to approve the minutes as amended from the January 9, 2014
meeting. Commissioner Weiss called for the motion and Commissioner Block seconded. All are in favor
as noted.
HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE:
Mr. Larry Stern introduced himself to the Commission. He is a retired business owner and will be
observing the meeting this evening. Larry Stern will be participating in the Northbrook Originals Show
for the first time and displaying his paintings.
Update of 2014 ART IN THE PARK (July 12 & 13)
Chairman Miller reported Artists are coming in slow due to the other event on the same date in Chicago.
We have 18 paid in full Artists and 46 Artists have paid the juror fees. We anticipate registration will fill
up by the date of the event. Artist Dennis Downes confirmed he will participate in the 2014 event. A
sub-committee meeting is being scheduled and anyone that would like to attend may. Chairman Miller
will be sending around the available dates to choose from. The sub-committee will be reviewing the
children’s activity and options to recommend to the commissioners. The commission has received a
proposal from Commissioner Natenberg, (she did the children’s activity at last year’s event), she would
like to take the same activity as last year but expand it for this year.
Commissioners discussed how parents bring their children to the event and have them do the children’s
activity so they can walk the park and visit the booths. The YMCA would like to propose a children’s
activity. We would have two booths for children’s activities, one from the commission and one from the
YMCA. One idea would be to paint Mexican Pebbles and display them around the flag pole at the
YMCA. The YMCA would need one tent and tables.
SPRING WORKSHOPS
Chairman Miller reports the Watercolor workshop is sold out and we have a waiting list of three. Our Oil
workshop we have seven registered. The workshops will be held at Meadow Hill Park as Earth Day will
be taking place at the Village Green. We have room for more people but we have a lighting issue as the
Park building is dark for painting. The commission is exploring options for lighting for the space.
NORTHBROOK ORIGINALS
Chairman Miller reported February 15th is the deadline. Emails went out last week and we have 21 artists
signed up already. We are hoping for a total of 30 to 35 Artists. The commission needs a volunteer to
help Celina Preston from the Northbrook Library to hang the art work and organize it. The reception will
be held on April 10, 2014.
MOTION: Commissioner Fischer motioned to change the next meeting date from April 3rd to April 10th,
Commissioner Weiss seconded the motion. All are in favor.
The next meeting will be held on April 10th in the Reception room before the reception. This will be an
abbreviated meeting.
Commissioner Winnie proposes a Special Needs Art Exhibit at the YMCA. She proposes that the Arts
Commission partner with the YMCA on the event. The proposal also includes a request for the Arts
Commission to donate the 18 X 24” frames for the exhibit and the food and beverages for the reception.
Chairman Miller and Commissioner Winnie have researched the pricing of the frames and it could require up
to 100 frames and volunteers to matt and frame the artwork. This event would run for two weeks in October.
Chairman Miller asked the commissioners if they should pursue this idea and if the commission would
like to partner with the YMCA. The commissioners present are in favor of this event. This event will be
part of the March meeting and a formal proposal will be submitted to the commission at that time.
Chairman Miller will be handing out copies of the update financial reports at every meeting for the
commissioners.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Commissioner Winnie announced the Annual Art Show will be March 9th at the YMCA.
The Concerts on Three at the Library started last week and about 100 people attended.
ADJOURN
Commissioner Fischer made a motion to adjourn and Commissioner Gianni seconded. On voice vote, the
motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 7:46 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
