MINUTES OF THE NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK MARCH 6, 2014 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 7:10 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall in the Terrace Room. Commissioners present: Chairman Miller, Commissioners Elsa Fischer, Maureen Fallows, Marilyn Jamora, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer, Cathie Winnie and Liaison Emma Trausch. Commissioners Excused: Jerry Block, Steve Gianni, Cherie Natenberg and Sherry Weiss. Commissioners Absent: MINUTES: Chairman Julia Miller asked for a motion to approve the minutes as amended from the February 6, 2014 meeting. Commissioner Fischer called for the motion and Commissioner Weiss seconded. All are in favor as amended. HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE: None in attendance. 2014 ART IN THE PARK (July 12 & 13) Chairman Miller reported a sub-committee meeting was held on February 27th. Commissioner Fischer, Jamora, Chairman Miller and Liaison Trausch were in attendance and discussed the larger areas of the event. The first was the layout regarding the tents in the parking lot. The basic layout will be the same as in the past with a few minor changes. Advertising discussed and the advertising committee which consists of Commissioner Fischer, Chairman Miller, Event coordinator Erin Melloy, Liaison Trausch and Cheryl Fayne-dePersio, Communications Manager for the Village. The committee will propose the best way to spend the advertising dollars. Chairman Miller would like to request approval from the Arts Commission to re-design the Art In The Park Logo. Commissioners would approve the design before it has been finalized. Motion: Commissioner Laughlin motioned to approve up to $500.00 to re-design the logo for Art In The Park. Commissioner Moyer seconded and all are in favor. Commissioner Laughlin is working on the music for the event and will give a list to Commissioner Fischer so she can include it in the Northbrook Park District advertising. Chairman Miller reported 61 artists accepted already. Images have been sent to Chairman Miller for review. Motion: Commissioner Moyer motioned to allow Chairman Miller to decide on Artwork for a new logo for Art In The Park, Commissioner Fischer seconded and all are in favor. SPRING WORKSHOPS Chairman Jamora reports we have to limit the watercolor workshop to 20 people due to the new location which will be at the Chalet in Meadowhill Park. The Village Green will be hosting Earth Day so the tile room is unavailable. We have 9 people on the waiting list. The March Oil painting workshop is up to 11 people with time to sign up more before the event. NORTHBROOK ORIGINALS Chairman Jamora reports the Art exhibit was juried on February 24th by Nancy Biels, Northshore Art League instructor and Artist, 49 pieces were juried into the show by 42 artists. They will deliver the artwork to the Library on March 26th, 27th and 28th. The acceptance letters will go out tomorrow. Selena Preston of the Northbrook Library is going to install the artwork on the 31st with a volunteer, Jerry Kerby. The exhibit will be through April 29th. The artwork will be picked up May 1st and 2nd. A reception will be held for the Artists and their guests on the second floor of the Library on April 10, 2014. Volunteers are needed to organize the reception. ROCK THE GREEN Chairman Laughlin reports the application form has been approved and they are already started to recruit bands to participate. The semi-finals will be held in the middle of May and the finals will be on June 6th. Advertising has begun for this event. GRANT REQUEST Chairman Miller presented a grant request from the Youth Commission for their Film Festival to the commission. Motion: Commissioner Jamora motioned to approve the request of $200.00 for the Youth Commission, seconded by Commissioner Moyer and all are in favor. YMCA Special Art Event Commissioner Cathie Winnie updated the commissioners on the request from Cove School. The YMCA would now like to have a Special Needs Art Exhibit for two weeks in October. This show would not be juried. The YMCA and Cove School would like to partner with the Arts Commission to help sponsor this event. More information and details will be available during the next few Arts Commission meetings. ANNOUNCEMENTS: The YMCA is looking for artists to display in their community gallery after September 2014. Chairman Miller reported that the Northbrook Park District has won some marketing awards. ADJOURN Commissioner Laughlin made a motion to adjourn and Commissioner Jamora seconded.
