OF THE NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION
VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK
November 6, 2014
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 7:00 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall in
the Development & Planning Conference Room (DPS).
Commissioners present: Chairman Miller, Commissioners Jerry Block, Elsa Fischer, Steve Gianni, Marilyn
Jamora, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer, Cherie Natenberg and Liaison Emma Trausch.
Commissioners Excused: Maureen Fallows
Commissioners Absent: None
Guests: Mr. James Karagianis, Northbrook Village Trustee and the Vice President of the Northbrook
Symphony Orchestra and Mr. David Rubens, North Shore Chamber Arts Ensemble.
NORTHSHORE CHAMBER ARTS ENSEMBLE
Mr. David Rubens was presenting the Ensemble to the Arts Commission. Mr. Rubens passed out a
packet for review by the commissioners of upcoming events. You can find more information at
Chamber-arts-ensemble.org. They are exploring new venues in Northbrook and have asked the
Commission for ideas. They are currently playing in Glencoe at the North Shore United Methodist
Church. The commission suggested contacting Our Lady of the Brook and the Village Presbyterian
Church. They currently have four concerts a year and would like to expand to five concerts a year.
They are also looking for donors so eventually all the concerts would be free.
NORTHBROOK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Mr. Jim Karagianis would like the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra to be more involved with the
Arts Commission. He announced their next concert will be on November 16, 2014 with a Violinist.
The Holiday Concert is December 7, 2014 at Techny Towers. This year the hours will be different
with the earlier concert from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with the second concert from 6:00 p.m. until
8:00 p.m. This would allow people to have dinner after 5:00 p.m. or around 8:30 p.m. in
Northbrook. The Music Institute of Chicago will be joining the Symphony Orchestra this year. They
are also looking at doing a concert at the Chicago Botanic Garden this year. In conjunction with the
Music Institute of Chicago this year they will be doing an additional concert in Evanston. The thrust
at the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra is to provide a venue for young professional musicians to
start to build their resume. The quality is outstanding. Last year they won a First Place
programming award for symphonies. They are looking for ideas to integrate with the Arts
Commission.
The commissioners thanked both gentlemen for attending the meeting.

REVIEW OF WEB SITE REDESIGN PROPOSAL
Chairman Miller received a proposal for the website redesign from the person Erin Melloy uses for the
Art Fairs. She will use “Word Press” which is a program the commission can maintain themselves and it
is user friendly. She proposes the cost of $1,500.00 for redesign with a few minor revisions and training
two commission members. This would be a onetime charge. After this is completed she would charge
$50.00/hour if we needed her assistance.
Currently the commission is paying a $250.00 fee for a host site and Word Press charges $199.00 to
$200.00 so it is comparable. Chairman Miller is asking the commission if $1,500.00 can be approved for
spending on a website redesign.
MOTION: Commissioner Moyer motioned to approve up to $1,500.00 for the redesign of the website
and Commissioner Fischer seconded the motion. All are in favor.
The final design will have to be approved by the Village of Northbrook.
UPDATE SPRING WORKSHOPS:
Commissioner Jamora reported they will have two workshops. Chairman Miller and Commissioner
Jamora sent out an E-Blast regarding the upcoming workshops. Emails and applications are already
being sent for the workshops. To break even we will need 12 for one and 6 for the other. The dates are
reserved. The pricing for Peggi Habets will be $175.00 and for Gordon France is will be $150.00. With a
20% discount to Northbrook residents and if anyone signs up for both workshops, they will receive a
$25.00 discount per workshop. These workshops profited $1,600.00 last year for the Friends of the Arts.
The Northbrook Park District donates the space for the workshops.
This is the first year we are offering two watercolor workshops. This is the most popular workshop so
the commission has decided to have two this year.
