NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION
VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK
October 6, 2016
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Christopher Laughlin at 7:00 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall
Terrace Room.
Commissioners present: Jerry Block, Sheila Day, Steve Gianni, Sharon Moyer and Marsha Schwartz.
Commissioners Excused: Al Alvarez, Bruce Bondy and Eileen Loftus.
Commissioners Absent: None
Guests in attendance: Janet Cordovi, Julia Miller, Chris Sheban and Chardrika Marla.
MINUTES:
Minutes from August 4, 2016 and September 1, 2016 meeting were approved with changes. Motion to approve
the minutes: Commissioner Gianni motioned and Commissioner Moyer seconded and all are in favor.
HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE: Julia Miller discussed the 2017 Spring Workshops and Marilyn Jamora,
Commissioner Moyer and Commissioner Day are working as a committee to work on the event. As of this
meeting the tentative dates are March 25th – 26th and May 20th – 21st, 2016. Tom Nachreiner (Oil Painter &
Acrylic) for March and Ken Call (Water Color Artist) for the May sessions. At this time we contact the Artists,
Northbrook Park District for dates of the Tile Room at the Village Green Center. We are limited to 20 people per
class.
The committee will continue to talk to the Artists and firm up their costs and costs related to them staying here for
the weekend Work Shops. All legal documents between the Artists, Northbrook Park District and the
Commission will be handled by Chairman Laughlin. Once contracts are done the price will be fixed for the
workshops. 20% discount for Northbrook residents and unincorporated Northbrook residents. There should be no
funding needed from the Arts Commission. The committee will report to the Commission when all prices are
finalized. Julia Miller will attend the December 3rd meeting to present more information.
LOCAL ARTIST STUDIO TOURS
Chandrika Marla reported that so far three Artists are willing to open up their homes/studios for tours from the
Public. The Leisure Center (on Walters) will also have three or more Artists to show their artwork. People can
start at the Leisure Center and follow the map to the homes/studios of the Artists. Chairman Laughlin will talk to
the Northbrook Park District regarding the use of the Leisure Center and waivers needed. Posters with a map will
be posted around town and maps will be made to pass out at the Leisure Center for the Artists Studios/Homes.
The event will be held November 5th from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. so please mark your calendars.
ART IN THE PARK – Planning for 2017
The Commissioners viewed the video Commissioner Block put together of photos of Art in the Park from 2016.
DISCUSSING PROPOSAL FOR AMY AMDUR
Chairman Laughlin discussed Amdur Productions. They would do everything so the Commission would have no
costs and no revenue. Sponsorships would be from Amdur Productions only. Commissioner Loftus liked what
she heard from Amy Amdur. The Village and the Northbrook Park District will work on the contract.
Commissioners are discussing a tent for the Northbrook Artists and how it would work. The commission
discussed her advertising and how well it works.

MOTION: Commissioner Block made a motion for the Commission to negotiate a contract with Amdur
Productions, Northbrook Park District, Village and the Commission for the 2017 Art in the Park, Commissioner
Schwartz seconded the motion, four (4) commissioners voted Yay and one (1) commissioner voted nay. Motion
passed.
DISCUSSION OF FINANCES
Chairman Laughlin reported at the end of August the Friends of the Arts had $12, 092.00. If you add in
Shermerfest they will have $11,642.00.
Budgeted events:
$500.00 Spring Workshops
$2200.00 Ethnic Dance Programs
$2000.00 Rock the Green
$300.00 Articulates
$300.00 Northbrook Artist Studio Tours
$1000.00 Library Concerts
$1000.00 2 Pianos, 4 Hands
If they minus the Spring Workshops this would be about $6,800.00. This leaves the Friends of the Arts about
$4,842.00 for other events.
The Village is reviewing proposals from entities that already receive support from the Village and request from
more from the Arts Commission. This is discouraged and will be reviewed further.
UDPATES ON ONGOING EVENTS
Artists in Residence: Commission Block reported everything is hanging from five different Artists that will up
until the 29th of October. There are 35 pieces hanging. The committee has contacted five other Artists for
November/December of 2016. The committee was discussing how the Artists in Residence should run six weeks
so we only need two more Artists until Northbrook Originals. The Northbrook Tower said they will put an
Article in for the Artists in Residence.
Articulates performance: This event is scheduled for January 15th at the Northbrook Public Library.
Plein Air Festival: No update.
Shermerfest: Event went well and the music that the commission sponsored was good.

OLD BUSINESS – None
ANNOUNCEMENTS – Chairman Laughlin has been planning a fund raising concert for the Friends of the Arts.
This will at the Lady of Brook possibly on December 18th. As soon as this date is confirmed, Chairman Laughlin
will let everyone know. Suggestion donations will be $20.00 per adult and $10.00 for students. Chairman
Laughlin will keep the commission updated on the date and time for this event.

Commissioner Block motioned to adjourn the meeting and Commissioner Gianni seconded the motion, all are in
favor at 8:20 p.m.
