“LEAD, SERVE, SHINE”
Chairman Carla Slawson-Martens and Co-Chairman Adam Wagner called the meeting to order at 7:02p.m.
in the Terrace Conference Room at the Village Hall. In attendance were: Village Liaison Kendal E. Maltas.
Adult members: Gary Moriello, Kay Stein, Michael Shore, Lauren Schifferdecker, Sharon Weingarten.

Elisco, Ethan Matlin, Harrison Marick, Amanda Mawrence. Also, Karie Luc, recorder. Not in attendance:
Sandie Huberty, Ben Stein, Joshua Handler, Ryan Wagner, Maggie Linforth, Josh Tolmatsky, Charlie
Serota and Julia Ring.
MINUTES
Chairman Slawson-Martens asked for a review of the meeting minutes for November 16, 2011. With one
correction by Member Weingarten, Member Moriello moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Member
Marick. On voice vote, the motion carried.
HEAR FROM AUDIENCE
No Report.
DEC. 14 LAKE COOK TERRACE CAROLING EVENT
Chairman Slawson-Martens and Co-Chairman Wagner asked for feedback. Member Moriello hopes to see
more teenage faces next year. Rescheduling might be an option next year due to the difficulty of a major
holiday December week before the winter break.
OPERATION SANTA CLAUS
Member Moriello explained that Operation Santa Claus donors will be receiving a photo collage
and thank yous. It is a 21 year program serving Goethe School in Chicago’s Logan Square. Goethe
School is also expanding in enrollment. Many students belong to low-income families. The whole
school was served, Member Moriello reported.
ANNUAL QUIZ BOWL – FEBRUARY 23
Liaison Maltas said that District 31 Field Middle School will not participate in the Quiz Bowl due to
budgetary reasons. This will impact the way the event will be presented and run. Members discussed
various ideas how to conduct the Quiz Bowl. Last year there were five schools. Member Luc suggested
additional questions to make the rounds longer. This was discussed. Member Marick discussed team
organization ideas.
Member Slawson-Martens entertained possible format scenarios. Member Moriello said he felt Member
Luc’s suggestion of adding sentences, making the rounds last longer. There were two ideas on the table –
about ordering of teams or length of rounds due to addition of questions. The lightening round questions
could offer the opportunity for flexibility of format. All of these ideas are worth exploring, said Chairman
Slawson-Martens. There will be reach-out efforts to students of Field Middle School to see if they would
like to participate in this no cost Quiz Bowl event.
Member Moriello felt Member Luc’s idea for adding on more questions to the round would work best.
Member Han said consolation prizes, like candy bars, would be a nice addition. Shirts, medals and quiz
bowl questions are ordered, said Liaison Maltas.

confirmed. Member E. Matlin will serve as back up to Power Point. Score keeper will be Co-Chairman A.
Wagner. Member Schifferdecker will do introductions. Student question readers will be determined, most
notably senior members. Liaison Maltas will reach out to these members to ask if they would like to serve
as readers. Medal presenters were also determined.
YOUTH FILM FESTIVAL UPDATE
Chairman Slawson-Martens met with Glenbrook North High School Instructor Todd Rubin, who heads the
television instruction department. There are many films produced by students which are outstanding,
according to Mr. Rubin. Chairman Slawson-Martens proposes Monday, June 11 as a date at the library.
Chairman Slawson-Martens said that Glenbrook South High School has a teacher there designated to film
teaching. Chairman Slawson-Martens asked how everyone felt about inviting GBS. Everyone was in 100
percent agreement to include both Glenbrook High School District 225 entities to celebrate film.
YOUTH FORUM
Chairman Slawson-Martens revisited the status which was discussion from the November meeting. She was
wondering what others felt about the next step. Last November, Member Weingarten’s idea of a youth
forum was explored by members. Member Weingarten felt the idea of writing comments instead of
speaking comments. This might be simpler, she felt, during the brainstorming. Member
Weingarten felt this helps for students to collect their thoughts, without have to share openly.
Chairman Slawson-Martens said the way she understood the youth forum discussion, it would
segue to an outreach to younger student populations who might have questions to high school-aged
students. The written component might not be inviting to busy teenagers who experience much
homework, Chairman Slawson-Martens felt.
Member Shore felt the grade school-aged population might have questions to GBN’s Peer Group
leaders, who could share what high school is like. Chairman Slawson-Martens says the benefit of
hosting an event to welcome Peer Group leaders is this group has been trained, and that Peer
Group leaders adhere to confidentiality. Liaison Maltas says she will prepare a summary of this
discussion to entertain at the March meeting.
STUDENT HOT TOPICS
Liaison Maltas said that Member Tomaltsky participates in a McDonald’s Burger Day. This takes
place in April. Member Marick said this is a worthwhile event to support. Member Elisco has been
nominated for the Congressional Youth Council. She was congratulated. Member Ring was also a
luncheon guest of the Northbrook Rotary Club.
NEXT MEETING IN MARCH 21, 2012 – WHO WILL CO-CHAIR?
Member Luc will be co-chairman.
ADJOURN
With no further business, Member Moriello made a motion to adjourn, this was seconded by Member
Marick. On voice vote, the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 8:30pm.
Respectfully submitted,
