Call to Order 40 Chairperson Slawson-Martens enlisted a Chairperson from student commissioners. New Commissioner 41 Bosacoma volunteered and called the meeting to order in the Terrace Room of Village Hall, 1225 Cedar 42 Lane, at 7:12 p.m. A quorum was present. 43 44 2. Approval of Meeting Minutes 45 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Whitlock, to approve minutes of the 46 October 21, 2013, Youth Commission meeting without corrections. Hear from the Audience 2 There was no audience. 3 4 4. 2013/14 Calendar of Events 5 A. Operation Santa Claus 6 7 Commissioner Moriello advised he’s received emails from sponsors to obtain more wish 8 lists however all lists have been satisfied. More wish lists have been requested. 9 10 Adam Wagner advised that the Key Club has a conflict and won’t be able to participate. 11 12 Commissioner Moriello advised that December 2nd is the deadline for books to be submitted. 13 14 Commissioner Moriello described this project for new Youth Commission members. 15 16 Commissioner Whitlock asked if there’s a way for folks not to be turned away. Commissioner 17 Moriello stated that these individuals’ names have been documented for next year. 18 19 B. Holiday Event – Lake Cook Terrace – 12/19 from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. 20 21 Chairperson Slawson-Martens reminded this event is on Thursday rather than Wednesday, 22 and there will not be a Youth Commission meeting next month. 23 24 Chairperson Slawson-Martens stated Mrs. Moriello will manage the Craft Fair. 25 26 Liaison Batalden advised caroling has been reuested. 27 28 Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised that Commissioner Han is working to secure musicians. 29 Ethan Matlin advised that he is unable to perform (playing the fiddle). 30 31 C. Quiz Bowl 32 33 Commissioner Slawson-Martens & Liaison Batalden advised this event is slated for February 34 20 or 27. It was asked if anyone has conflicts on these dates. Ultimately, the date of February 35 27th was selected with the time being 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. At the January meeting, assignments 36 will be provided. Commissioner Moriello reminded the event will be held in the Board Room 37 and five schools are participating. A brief description was given about Quiz Bowl. It was 38 stated this will be the 17th Annual. 39 40 D. Film Fest 41 42 Commissioner Whitlock advised that a Monday in June is typical and recommended June 9th 43 for this event. Conversations are happening with potential theater and high school staff. 44 45 Commissioner Whitlock asked if there are written examples for specifications on the kind of 46 films to submit. Chairperson Slawson-Martens will provide Commissioner Whitlock with Page 3 Minutes of the November 20, 2013 Youth Commission Meeting 1 same. Commissioner Whitlock has a few judges in mind as well. 2 3 Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised that in the past, we were struggling to obtain films. 4 Films could now be placed on YouTube for previewed viewing. Inappropriate films or low 5 quality ones were omitted in the past. Due to few films submitted, there was no judging last 6 year. Cash prizes are an option. It was decided that it is too early to decide on judging/prizes. 7 8 Chairperson Slawson-Martens stated that the Library will be under construction beginning in 9 March so that is not a viable venue. 10 11 Chairperson Slawson-Martens referenced Wilmettetheatre.com and Liaison Batalden 12 illustrated the web site and the Actors Training Center. An option is to ask if this group would 13 like to partner. The web site of cinemachicago.org was accessed and viewed. Its event, CINE 14 Youth Festival, is sponsored by Columbia College, and is an International one. 15 16 Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised previous college film winners could be noted with a 17 clip on the Village’s web site to introduce the event. 18 19 Commissioner Wagner offered suggestions for judges as well. 20 21 Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised that REEL Chicago is another organization (where high 22 school dropouts are involved). 23 24 Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested that participants/winners could dovetail to the CINE 25 Youth Festival. 26 27 Liaison Batalden mentioned suggested a Public Service Announcement (PSA) category could 28 be developed within the Film Fest. Music videos, short films, animations, and documentaries 29 could also be included. 30 31 Commissioner Whitlock asked if May is a realistic deadline for films to be submitted. After 32 some discussion, it was decided that May 9th is a good date. 33 34 Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested an “edgy” title be used for this event. 35 36 Commissioner Whitlock stated he will contact parents of last year’s winners (who expressed 37 interest) and form a committee. 38 39 Chairperson Slawson-Martens asked everyone’s thoughts on where the event should be held. 40 Commissioner Whitlock stated he likes the idea of broadening the event but hosting it in 41 Northbrook. Chairperson Slawson-Martens concurred. 42 Commissioner Wagner suggested that when searching in Google (or wherever) for the IL Film 43 Festival, our Northbrook Film Festival should pop up. Commissioner Matlin concurred. 44 45 Chairperson Slawson-Martens asked Liaison Batalden if a separate web site could be made 46 for this event. Liaison Batalden stated a page dedicated to the Film Fest is more likely on the 47 Village’s current web site. Page 4 Minutes of the November 20, 2013 Youth Commission Meeting 1 2 Commissioner Whitlock asked if “Contact/Other Information” could be submitted by the user 3 on the site. A video site is also suggested. An archive of previous year’s films is 4 recommended. Liaison Batalden stated this could be tied in with the Village’s Facebook page. 5 Commissioner Whitlock suggested a meeting with the Communications person so that this 6 Commission could share what is important to promote this event. 7 8 Commissioner Whitlock will try to locate a media network within the high schools as well. 9 10 5. New Business 11 A. Village Family Dinner Feedback 12 13 Several commissioners attended this event: 14  Chairperson Slawson-Martens thought it was good, expressing that desserts were 15 unbelievable. A brief synopsis of the event was shared. 16  Commissioner Moriello stated he recruited volunteers for Operation Santa Claus. 17 18 6. Old Business 19 There was no Old Business. 20 21 7. Student Hot Topics 22 23 Commissioner Wagner advised he is writing a junior research history paper. 24 25 Commissioner Bosacoma advised: 26  Student Council is raising money for Susan G. Komen 27  Environmental Club is raising money for waste and recycling 28 29 8. Adjournment 30 Chairperson Slawson-Martens wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. 31 32 Commissioner Bosacoma called for a motion to adjourn.
