37 1. Call to Order
38 Chairperson Slawson-Martens opened the meeting and enlisted Commissioner Kirschenbaum to be
39 Student Chairperson (in place of Commissioner Bosacoma who couldn’t attend this evening).
40 Commissioner Kirschenbaum called the meeting to order in the Terrace Room of Village Hall, 1225 Cedar
41 Lane, at 7:04 p.m. A quorum was present.

43 2. Welcome
44 Commissioner Kirschenbaum welcomed everyone to this evening’s Youth Commission meeting.

46 3. Approval of Meeting Minutes
47 Commissioner Kirschenbaum moved, seconded by Commissioner Whitlock, to approve the minutes of
48 the December 17, 2014, Youth Commission meeting. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried.

4 5. 2014/15 Upcoming Calendar of Events
5 a. Quiz Bowl
6 Student Chairperson Martens noted Commissioners’ assignments for the Quiz Bowl.

8 Commissioner Moriello identified, after review, that there were too many math questions
9 and literature question that may not be current. Chairperson Slawson-Martens noted that
10 teams must have a balance with the questions. Discussion took place regarding the
11 questions. Student Chairperson Martens and Chairperson Slawson-Martens stated the
12 rehearsal date is February 18th, 2015, at the regularly-scheduled Youth Commission
13 meeting. Chairperson Slawson-Martens shared the process of selecting questions.

15 Commissioner Dinelli suggested, for next year, choosing another company that might have
16 updated questions.

18 Commissioner Moriello added questions about Northbrook and read same. Other
19 Commissioners offered recommendations regarding Northbrook Days, population of
20 Northbrook, Village President’s name, etc. Suggestions for the Lightening Round were
21 proposed as well -- i.e. questions from To Kill A Mockingbird, etc.

23 The duty of coin flipper was assigned to Commissioner Whitlock. Those recruited to read
24 the questions were Commissioners Steinberg, Wagner, Han, and Hakimian.

26 Student Chairperson Martens and Liaison Batalden advised everyone that Solomon
27 Schechter school has again declined to participate.

29 Chairperson Slawson-Martens shared the process of the “bye” round. Student Chairperson
30 Kirschenbaum volunteered to be the reader for the Lightning Round. Student Chairperson
31 Whitlock volunteered to manage the timer, and Commissioner Elisco will be scorekeeper.

33 Liaison Batalden advised he would forward the PowerPoint presentation to Student
34 Chairperson Martens.

36 b. Lake Cook Terrace Spring Visit
37 Chairperson Slawson-Martens reminded this event is slated for March 18, 2015. Liaison
38 Batalden will contact Lake Cook Terrace to inquire if this date is available.

40 Chairperson Slawson-Martensa asked Commissioners for suggestions of an activity while
41 visiting the residents. Recommendations are:
42 Bingo (with prizes)
43 Manicures
44 Mingle/Engage
45 Play Cards in small groups
46 Poker

4 Since there won’t be another meeting in which to prepare, Chairperson Slawson-Martens
5 stated that 10 minutes be devoted at the beginning of the next Youth Commission meeting
6 to assign games (per round table of residents).

8 Food and beverage for the Quiz Bowl event was briefly discussed. Commissioner Martens
9 moved, seconded by Commissioner Kirschenbaum, to purchase pizzas and beverages for
10 the Quiz Bowl. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. Commissioner
11 Kirschenbaum moved, seconded by Commissioner Martens, that the food and beverage
12 budget be in the amount of $200. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried.

14 c. Film Fest
15 Commissioner Whitlock revealed there is no update at this time. Chairperson Slawson-
16 Martens shared that the library theater will not be available for the film fest (as the rules
17 there are changing).

19 Discussion ensued about an April, May, or June date and the appropriate day of the week.
20 Commissioner Whitlock stated that students submitting films is key. Commissioner Morreale
21 reminded that May is a very busy month for high school students. Commissioners Martens
22 and Kirschenbaum advised that academics and sports are lean in May. The week after
23 Memorial Day was suggested. The consensus is that Thursday is an appealing day of the
24 week so May 28, 2015, is recommended.

26 Commissioner Whitlock moved, seconded by Chairperson Slawson-Martens that May 28,
27 2015, be a tentative date. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried.

29 Back to Quiz Bowl……

31 Student Commissioner Martens stated a budget of $550 must be approved for T-shirts and
32 Medals. Commissioner Martens moved, seconded by Commissioner Christenson, that a
33 budget of $550 be approved for T-shirts and Medals. On a voice vote, the motion
34 unanimously carried.

36 6. Old Business
37 a. Study Buddy Program Update
38 Commissioner Morreale advised there is new leadership at the library so she suggests this
39 topic be revisited in the summer. She reminded the target audience is elementary students.

41 7. New Student Member Campaign
42 Commissioner Morreale suggested that the Youth Commission have a facebook page. Liaison Batalden
43 reminded that the Village has a facebook page, and all Commissions currently run information through
44 that page (as there is no manpower to manage individual Commission facebook pages). Chairperson
45 Slawson-Martens shared that this was suggested to Village staff in the past – however to no avail.
46 Commissioner Morreale advised she spoke with President Frum who likes the idea. Chairperson

1 Slawson-Martens and Liaison Batalden recommended that Commissioner Morreal speak with Cheryl
2 Fayne-Depersio, the Communications Manager.

4 Commissioner Christenson reminded that one of the goals is to attain more Youth Commissioners.
5 Chairperson Slawson-Martens noted that recent members were recruited from Government Day, etc.

7 8. Adult Member Orientation Meeting
8 Chairperson Slawson-Martens stated she would like to meet with new members to share the history of
9 the Youth Commission.

11 After some discussion, Commissioner Whitlock agreed that there needs to be a comprehensive
12 approach to communicate with the schools. He suggested a Subcommittee to recruit youth members.

14 Commissioner Dinelli inquired as to bylaws for this Commission. Chairperson Slawson-Martens shared
15 that the Commission’s mission statement, etc. is laid out in the Village code.

17 9. Old Business
18 Commissioner Dinelli distributed an article about Commissioner Han’s award.
19
20 Commissioner Moriello stated the children from Goethe School enjoyed their gifts, and thank-you notes
21 were provided to donors.

23 Commissioner Dinelli suggested having sub-committees for various topics, upcoming events.

25 Liaison Batalden noted that Commissioners interested in participating at the Earth Day event, which
26 takes place on April 25, 2015, will have an opportunity to sign up in February for duties (clean-up,
27 recycling, etc.). Commissioner Morreale suggested signing up the Youth Commission, as a group, and
28 identified various areas in which to participate. Liaison Batalden advised he will email Commissioners
29 the available duties prior to the next Youth Commission meeting.

32 There was no new business.

34 11. Student Hot Topics
35 Commissioner Elisco noted that on March 8, 2015, from 2 p.m.-4 p.m., North Suburban Prom
36 Fashion Show will be held at the YMCA. She advised that volunteers are needed (to model, etc.).

38 12. Next Meeting
39 The next meeting will be February 18, 2015, when the Quiz Bowl rehearsal will take place.

42 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Kirschenbaum, to adjourn the meeting at
43 8:30 p.m. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried.
