Call to Order 36 Chairperson Slawson-Martens enlisted Commissioner Brodson as Student Chair for this meeting. 37 38 2. Welcome 39 Student Chair Brodson welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order in the Terrace Room of 40 Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane, at 7:04 p.m. A quorum was present. 41 42 3. Approval of Meeting Minutes 43 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Stein, to approve the YC meeting minutes of 44 September 16, 2015. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 45 46 4. Hear from the Audience 47 There was no Hear from the Audience. 48 Page 2 Minutes of the November 18, 2015 Youth Commission Meeting 1 5. Review of Youth Commission Mission and Activities 2 Chairperson Slawson-Martens reviewed a PowerPoint presentation. She advised that she and Liaison 3 Batalden met with Village Manager, Rich Nahrstadt to obtain his input about the YC. Mr. Nahrstadt 4 shared that he doesn’t see the YC as an events-driven Commission. 5 6 The upcoming, state mandated, civics curriculum was referenced. It was inferred that perhaps the YC 7 could serve a role. 8 9 It was also stated that the concept of topics that are appealing to youth was addressed (via a 10 presentation to the Park District, etc.). The YC would explore same and perhaps be an Advisory Board. 11 12 Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised that she and Liaison Batalden met with Kate Hall, Executive 13 Director of Northbrook Public Library. She stated Ms. Hall is open to partnering (and even perform a trial 14 run for Quiz Bowl and Film Fest). It was suggested that perhaps the venue would be in the library 15 theater. Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised the library has an Advisory Council as well. Commissioner 16 Dinelli shared that the library has a core pool of younger adults. Student Chair Brodson stated he has a 17 concern that these events may become known as library-run events. Chairperson Slawson-Martens 18 stated for the next year, the library staff would be invited by the YC and they would promote the event 19 as well. 20 21 Growth of the Film Fest was discussed. Student Chair Brodson suggested videos could be made by 22 students. 23 24 Chairperson Slawson-Martens stated YC members could be identified to assist with events that may be 25 managed elsewhere. 26 27 Student Chair Brodson suggested a Family Game Night during Winter Break. 28 29 A history of YC events and the improvement of their promotion were discussed. Commissioner Elisco 30 stated she would inquire to Dr. Michael Tarjan, Assistant Principal/Student Activities of Glenbrook North 31 to attend a future YC meeting. 32 33 Chairperson Slawson-Martens reiterated that the direction coming from the Village is for the YC not to 34 be events-driven. Suggestions on the process of the YC were shared. 35 36 Commissioner Elisco recommended to establish a YC Club at Glenbrook North that could report to the 37 Village’s YC. 38 39 Strengths and weaknesses of the YC were discussed. 40 41 Chairperson Slawson-Martens asked the YC to think about what this Commission would look like 42 without events. 43 44 Commissioner Dinelli departed at 8 p.m. 45 46 Commissioner Elisco summarized identifying which youth the YC is serving, allow them to have a voice, 47 then perhaps entertain an internship concept. Village Family Dinner 10 Comments were that the event was nice and the food was good. 11 b. Homecoming 12 Comments were that the event was packed and boring. 13 c. Operation Santa Claus 14 Commissioner Moriello advised another school was added to the program; therefore, a total of 15 790 children were provided with books from their wish lists. 16 17 9. Next Meeting 18 The next meeting will be December 16th and the following meeting will be moved to January 27th, 2015. 19 20 10.
