Visit to the Illinois Holocaust Museum led by Pat Urbanus, Docent, Skokie Board of Health Member
The evening began with Board of Health members viewing the special exhibit: "Stories of Survival:
Object. Image. Memory."
A. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. by Dr. Drachler, Chairman.
B. Approval of Board of Health Meeting Minutes, Materials Distributed: The minutes of the
November 8th meeting were presented and approved.
C. Presentation: Pat Urbanus, Skokie Board of Health member, Docent Illinois Holocaust Museum
facilitated a discussion in the "Take a Stand" Hologram exhibit. We listened to Pinchas Gutter,
Holocaust survivor present his life story.
Discussion:
Skillfully facilitated by Pat Urbanus, Board of Health members asked Mr. Gutter questions about his
life, how he survived the concentration camps, and what legacy he would wish to leave the world.
It was a fascinating and moving experience.
D. Chair’s Report
Dr. Drachler reported that he, Trustee Karen Grey-Keeler, and Dr. Counard attended a “hard hat tour”
of the Erie/Evanston Skokie Clinic. The clinic capacity will double and will have the capacity to serve
7,000 additional patients. The ribbon cutting ceremony is slated for March 2019.
E. Health Director’s Monthly Report: (a copy is attached, and was distributed during the meeting)
1. Measles concern-Orthodox Jewish Community
The New York and New Jersey Orthodox Jewish communities are experiencing outbreaks of
measles, after unvaccinated individuals traveled to Israel where ongoing transmission of measles
is occurring. There is concern that similar outbreaks could happen in the Chicago area, and
Chicago Rabbis have issued a strong statement urging vaccination to protect against measles.
In response, the Health Department sent letters to the seven Jewish Schools in Skokie, and 20
area physicians identified as providing care for children in Skokie Jewish schools. We are
alerting them to the situation and urging measles vaccination as a preventative measure.
2. Resilient Families at Skokie Public Library
More than 100 adults and children attended the Resilient Families event at the Skokie Public
Library. This is the first of many planned conversations to introduce ACEs and trauma informed
care to our community.
3. Village Food Safety Code Amended
The Board of Trustees adopted the current IDPH Food Code, which references the FDA Model
Food Code (a national gold standard). The new code takes effect January 1, 2019, and Skokie
Food Service Establishments have been notified.
