Consumer Affairs Commission Minutes July 13, 2022 In attendance: Trustee Khoeun, Joanne Haeberlin, Anil Pillai, George Mathew, Jerry Kirkpatrick, Davorka Kirincic, Justin Malone. Intro topic: What is your favorite board or card game. Minutes: It was moved and seconded to accept minutes. Correction to typo “Tattoo” in Farmers Market report. Accepted. Farmers Market: Jennifer submitted report that she is continuing to field requests for new vendors and more entertainment. Possible henna artist for August. Working on something special for National Farmers Market week August 7th. Request from commission that we have a map or listing of which vendors are expected to be in attendance. Sign up sheet for CAC members to attend market. Joanne will be out of town for the August 7 market. Business of the Year: Questionnaire was reviewed. Changes. Davorka to update logo, update dates to 2022, change who they are to be submitted to. Delete Covid question. Reported that we had many fewer nominations this year. Suggestions. Put sign, blanks and QR code on the table in the lobby. Joanne to contact Howard to see if Chamber would put up information. There was a discussion about the possibility of inviting the winner and runners up to attend a Farmers Market. Free publicity for the Skokie business and no cost to the Village. Any handouts approved. Joanne to contact Nick. Media Literacy Education George, Anil, Pouriya and Joanne attended the Media Literacy presentation at the library on July 12. Rebroadcast of 1 ½ hour “Trust Me” with the impact producer and Renee Hobbs, Julie Coiro and Troy Hicks from Media Education Lab (an organization working to improve media literacy education) attended virtually as an information panel. Michael Spikes from Northwestern University and Mariah Cherem from the Skokie Library attended in person. Mariah has informed the CAC that they are possibly going to make the recording available. Both George and Anil commented on how informative it was. This was sponsored by the Consumer Affairs Commission. The piece of the project still to be worked on is a possible website containing information on who and how to contact to verify the veracity of what you are seeing/hearing. Michael Spikes has agreed to help with this. Miscellaneous George brought up the question of whether Skokie has an involvement if two gas stations (same brand) display different prices. Trustee Kheoun gave us information on the Sustainable Environmental Survey for Skokie residence. Deadline July 31. Next meeting is August 10. Meeting adjourned at 7:26 Joanne Haeberlin Chair

Miscellaneous Sec 2-812 Duties It shall be the duty of the Consumer Affairs Commission to coordinate consumer affairs activities, carry on educational activities on consumer matters, supervise the preparation of consumer affairs reports and recommend to the Mayor and the Board of Trustees ordinances, rules and regulations and methods of enforcement in relation to consumer affairs activities.
