Human Relations Commission Monday, June 27th, 2022 7:20pm In Person 5127 Oakton St. Skokie, IL. 60077 MINUTES Present: Deborah Arnold, Alexander Chaparro Sheila Crumrine, Daphnee Camilien, Jim McVane, Pahan, Karen Sherman, Jaili Fajardo, Krishna Goyal, Jeremy Segall, James Specker, Anwar Haq, Marcos Levy, Louis Mercer, Trustee Khem Khoeun Chair: Maria Monastero Bueno and Liaison Iris Barrios Not present (E) = Excused: (E), David Donegan (E), Jonathan Lavin (E), Michelle Reitman (E), Pearl Rubenzik (E), Moe Yanes (E), Meeting Called to Order at 7:20pm Human Relations Chair Maria gave thanks to everyone in the group. Thanks to everyone who attended the Skokie Pride and special thanks to Sheila who worked closely with the Oakton Park District and made sure that HRC had a table and everything set up. Block Party of the Year Iris presented a power point and reminded the group about voting online for the block party of the year award. Iris also printed out paper forms to vote for those unable to vote online. Only one vote per HRC member. Went over PowerPoint photos and Commissioners voted. Iris to count votes and let Commissioners know winner via email. Winners to be presented at July Board Meeting. Subcommittee Updates: Block Parties: Daphnee mentioned that she attended the block party on Kildare. Maria reminded Commissioners about their attendances to block parties and writing their names on the google excel form. Skokie Pride: James mentioned that the group should get together prior to the Pride and put the pinwheels together. It was a windy day, so the activity of pinwheels was hard for the commissioners to put the extra pinwheels together at the table. Anwar asked about the flags. It was explained that they were rainbow flags for Pride Fest. Anwar then asked if HRC was participating in 4th of July. Explained that the parade will be meeting at Oakton College and go up Lincoln St. The Family Services Commission will be walking with another commission. Vehicles for the 4th may have already be picked out. Old Business/Updates Iris updated the group about the Farmers Market Volunteer Support Sign Up via Sign- Up Genius in partnership with the Family Services Commission. Iris will email out the link for the volunteer sign up. New Business Trustee Khem spoke about the sustainability Survey. The Village of Skokie would like the group and submissions in by July 15th. Iris to email link and information at the end of the meeting. Maria asked that the HRC group take the Summer break to think about ideas and come back in September with thoughts about what HRC has previously participated in what HRC can participate in moving forward. Louis mentioned the use of items from Village of Skokie Fire Dept. at the Festival of Cultures. This brought up that Coming Together was no longer going to continue next year. That 2022 was the last year. Maria spoke about the last 13 years for Coming Together and how they had their closing breakfast and why the group has come their decision. Trustee Khem spoke about the conversations happening within Village Hall, Jasmine from Northwestern and Kim from the Mitchell Museum. A committee with for a safe space to be created Fall of 2022. HRC members spoke about the committee starting up. Daphnee spoke on education and history are important pieces of the committee. Trustee Khem spoke on what the Board and Trustees are working on. Jeremy spoke about names of the parks. As a group, it is understood that this is the beginning of a longer conversation. The committee will come this Fall. HRC to take this Summer to go over what HRC has already worked on and re-join this September to bring new ideas to the table including the ongoing conversations already happening. Reminder that Festival of India to take place on August 6th in Skokie at Oakton Park. 11am-11:30am will be the Pulling of the Chariot starting at Village Hall to Skokie Part District. Overview of the symbolism of the Pulling of the Chariot, going to the Temple and the festival for the blessing over the community for the holy day. Last note before the adjournment, Marcos created a product that resembles a dog house for people. Has a patient pending. It is a relationship builder for communication and is sharing the information for the group.
