New Business
1. Elizabeth Nelson, Health and Human Services Village of Skokie, joined the
Human Relations as the October guest. Nelson went over the equity and data,
IPlan, environmental data, collective impact and how the data would be a
measurable framework for the residents and staff of Skokie. The members of the
Commission asked what the IPlan was, where data was being collected from,
and what collaborations were being brought in from community partners.
Commissioners provided community connections, ideas, and what other
agencies have been doing for Nelson. Nelson let the commissioners know of the
date outlined for the action plan, IPlan for 2023-2028 as well as a community
meeting coming up. Iris provided Nelson with HRC emails for Nelson to invite
Commissioners to a community meeting for community input.
Old Business/Updates
1. Trustee Khem provided an update on the hate crimes and what is being done at a
federal level. She stated that there has been an escalation in Skokie but that they
cannot be defined as a hate crime by Skokie Police Department due to not meeting
the criteria of a hate crime. Conversation around the HRC meeting about moving
these cases to the HRC when they do not meet the level of a hate crime but a police
report is filed. Members of the community can come to HRC as a local level as it is
still harming the community and members can voice their concerns. Trustee Khem
working with Dick Durban and other organizations to review how this would work.
Members suggested working with the Anti-Defamation organization as well.
Tuesday, Nov. 1st at 12pm at the Rotary Club, there will be an Anti-Defamation
conversation hosted. Jon will email Iris to then share with the group. It will be in
person and via zoom.
